Error on Profile

+2 votes
Hi, I've been adding some of my ancestors and I've hit a problem with Hopkins-7306.  The wife and child are correct as per my previous research, but I don't think the date of birth, parents or siblings are.  I have anecdotal evidence from the late 1940s that he was born in Morley, not Rothwell.

I guess my question is, what is the best way to resolve it?  Should I add a new profile for my William and remove the wife and child from this one?

Oh, forgot to add, the Morley Hopkins is a quaker, as were the relatives that we have living memory of.  I don't think the Rothwell one is?

I think you did the right thing adding a comment, and in addition:

  1. it's an orphaned profile, so you could adopt it
  2. You could/should add a Research Notes section and put your data to support your conclusions
  3. You should look up additional sources that you can find, and once you have three or so that support your theory, disconnect the family members that you believe to be incorrect.
  4. Mother/Father seem to be orphaned and unsourced also
  5. check Abraham (sibling), there are some narrative clues that might lead to sources to decide either way
  6. If you can see yours is clearly different, but there is support for both, then create the new profile. It will be up to what you find as to whether you just disconnect or create a new one.

Thanks very much for the reply.  Rothwell Hopkins definitely exists, as I've seen his baptism details.  Our family anecdotal evidence gave an birthplace for our Hopkins, and I've found a sibling in a document confirmed as born there.  With that and the religious link I'm pretty sure all our old family trees are right.  So I think starting a new profile and attaching the relevant relatives would be the way to go.
