What is needed to confirm Y-DNA matches using my Y-DNA matches on FTDNA?

I have a living 2nd cousin who has completed Y-DNA testing for 37 markers on FTDNA

We have a match that shows genetic distance = 1

We have the same paternal great grandparents (our grandfathers were brothers)

I have close Y-DNA matches at 111 markers with two living Hunt's

One is genetic distance 9 and the other at genetic distance 10

I have no paper trail beyond my 2nd great grandfather Hunt for my paternal line

How would this be used for confirming my Y-DNA?

Hi Phil, Welcome to WikiTree!  You should enter all of your Hunt line that you know of in WikiTree.  Have you contacted your two Hunt yDNA 111 matches and asked them about their paper trails?  If they know their trees, it would be helpful if they would also add those to WikiTree.  Are you in a Hunt surname project at FTDNA?  I'm not sure what you mean about 'confirming' your yDNA.  Are you hoping to use your yDNA results to find more information about your Hunt paternal line?  You might also find that an autosomal DNA test would help you find other cousins who might have additional information about your ancestry.

Hello Kay -- Johnson-18438

Thanks for your reply.

Yes - I have been collaborating with them for a few years now. We are members of the Hunt surname project, yes. Both of us have walls at our 2nd great grandparents. So, we have yet to find our MRCA (most recent common ancestor).

Your comment: "...I'm not sure what you mean about 'confirming' your yDNA". Under My WikiTree on home page, fourth block down is call DNA Confirmation. After selecting that link you will see what I am faced with trying to complete.

Yes - I have had autosomal DNA tested and have found quite a number of cousins - from 1st cousin to about 6th cousins so far. Still no help in learning what ancestor came to the USA. GEDmatch.com is quite useful here.

The main issue with my wall - David - my 2nd great grandfather - does not provide his mother's maiden name. He also does not provide any given name for his father (ever). This seems to be a deliberate effort to disassociate with his father - or where he came from. He only mentions - each census - that his father was born in Virginia and he was born in Tennessee. However, following his death in 1918, his eldest son reports in the 1920 census that David was born in Ireland and spoke Irish as his native tongue. If true, then I must look to the west coast of Ireland for his departure point.

Looks like I should ask my cousins to join the WikiTree.

Thanks again for your help. Any further comments would be appreciated.

Phil

My sympathies, Phil!  This is a puzzle you may not solve for a long time!  When another man who has a piece of your puzzle takes a yDNA test and matches you, sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes it takes years.  I work with Kitty Smith on Smith yDNA, trying to sort out Smith lines.  Many Smith men in our surname project still don't match anyone.  Do follow up on your autosomal DNA connections.  They could end up giving you more clues.

Hello Phil,

To properly use WikiTree's DNA Confirmation tool you should upload your 111 marker results to YSearch and add your YSearch ID to your DNA Tests page in WikiTree.

Sincerely, Peter
