If he was 50 in 1910, that would calculate back to an 1860 birth.
Whoops! sorry for the typo.

In the 1900 census, there is a 42-year old Henry W. Sage, born Jan 1858 in NY of NY-born parents living in Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri. He's a laborer rooming in what appears to be a boarding house on Hickory.  He's also widowed.

I'm tapping from my iPhone and can't get a complete citation.

Ah... the 1880 census is far more interesting, but VERY difficult to read; the image is awful. This is from Ancestry's index of the image:

Name: Henry Sage
Age: 21
Birth Year: abt 1859
Birthplace: New York
Home in 1880: Peshtigo, Marinette, Wisconsin
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Brother [see below]
Marital Status: Single
Father's Name: David Sage <-- Correction: this is misindexed of DANIEL
Father's Birthplace: New York
Mother's name: Carrine Sage<-- Correction: this is misindexed of CATHERINE
Mother's Birthplace: New York
Occupation: Laborer
Cannot read/write:

Household Members:
Name Age
Mary Hase 27 - [she's listed as married, but the husband is not enumerated here; based on other information, her maiden name was Sage]
Wilburt Hase 1 - [son of Mary]
Angeline Hase 4 - [named "cousin" of Mary (probably cousin of her husband)]
David Sage 64 - [b abt 1816; father of Mary, and therefore father of Henry, b NY of NY-born parents]
Carrine Sage 56 - [b abt 1824, mother of Mary; and given that Henry was born after Mary, also mother of Henry; b. NY of NY-born parents]
Henry Sage 21 - [b abt 1859; brother of Mary and therefore son of David and Carrine; b NY; single; laborer]
Howard Sage 16 - [b abt 1864; brother of Mary, etc..]

Of possible interest: at the top of this same page is:

Charles Sage, 72 [b abt 1808 NY of NY-born parents; might he be brother of David, above?]
Hariet Sage, 52, wife [b abt 1828 NY of NY-born father; CT-born mother]

This family -- sort of -- is in Peshtango in 1870; at that time Peshtango was part of Oconto Co., Wisconsin. (Must have been a county change between 1870 in 1880.) Two Sage families enumerated one after the other:

Sage, Almerd?, 47, laborer, b NY

-, Sebring, f, 31 or 51, f, keeping house, b NY

[blank line]

-, Almerina, 15, b NY

-, Nancy, 14, b NY

-, Maria, 10, b NY [Slightly off from the Mary in the 1880 census]

[next family:]

Sage, Daniel, 58, farm laborer, b NY

-, Catherine, 49, keeping house

-, Louana, 19, school teacher

-, Delphine, 18

-, Walter, 11 <-- He is right age to be Henry W

-, Howard, 6 [name and age matches Howard enumeraged in 1880 census above]

several lines down, enumerated in the house of Peter Winters:

Sage, Charles, 42, farmer, b NY

-, Harriet, 43, b NY

The above two match the Charles and  Hariet Sage in the 1880 census.

Okay, the 1860 census says this:

Blenheim, Scholarie Co., New York:

Daniel Sage, 42, coooper, b NY

Catherine, 36?, b NY

Louanna, 10, b NY

Mary, 7, b NY <-- right age to be Mary, 27 of 1880 census

Delphene, 3, enumerated as male, b NY

Henry W., 1, b NY <-- I love that the middle initial helps us tie him to the Henry without a middle initial in 1880 and therefore later Henry W. Sages...

Going back to the 1880 census, I mentioned that the image was difficult to read. I'm now looking at the enlarged image of it, and I think Ancestry.com mis-indexed Henry's parents' names. "Carrine" is definitely Catherine when you look at the image, and "David"'s name is VERY light, and could very well be Daniel.

So I think we can now safely say that Henry W. Sage's parents were Daniel Sage and Catherine _____.

An Ancestry.com family tree claims Henry's mother's name was Katherine Hager, but without a source.

A review of 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses finds a Daniel Sage in Blenheim, Scholarie, New York, suggesting the possibility that Daniel, father of Henry W., was son of another Daniel.

Working with various published geneaogies-- some better than others-- as well as published vital records, I got your H.W. Sage back to the immigrant, David Sage, b 1639. See
