Luther Shonio the son of John Baptiste Shonio (1792 - 1867) and Lucy I (Boyden) Shonio (abt. 1804 - 1883). He was a civil war veteran serving as a bugler and having died of disease in Louisiana during the war. We need help sourcing him and his military service. What Company did he serve? The 5 brothers of this Vermont family all served in the war. Any help is appreciated.

Brothers who served:

Abel Shonio (abt. 1844 - 1867)

Arnold Benedict Shonio (1835 - 1896)

Chauncey S Shonio (1830 - 1905)

George A Shonio (abt. 1840 - 1914)

The war had a significant impact on this family and I would like to research further each of the brothers military service as most were wounded or P.O.W.

Thank you Natalie

I checked the NPS and it has his rank and regiment but I can’t find his company? I don’t have Fold3 access at this time. It would be nice to know his company to complete his civil war sticker info

The brothers are listed in this book but Luther has no company; the others do. Maybe the Battery wasn't divided by companies? The text about the Battery begins on p. 625 and there is no mention of companies.

Thank you this is a good source smiley

Fold3 has him in the Files for Index Cards(only one card for each soldier---usually for states that haven't had all the files scanned.

Under the Vermont folder, he is listed as SHONNIO and SHONNIE.  This folder has his records containing 20+ cards.

+Death Certificate--  Died at USA General Hospital, Baton Rouge La Sept 3, 1863 from disease.

Artillery batteries did have companies.  Maybe not all of them.  Vermont had about 2 batteries of Light and Heavy artillery and maybe more.  Now you need to find the history of this unit.  You can try a search in Google Books for "Adjutant General Report Vermont".  This might pull up a report published a few years after the war that details every regiment of that state.  I haven't checked for Vermont.

The book source I linked to is the report of the Adjutant General.
