Italy Project Teams Assemble!

Hail!

A while back, Steve Harris and I worked on creating teams for the Italy Project. These teams would be based on the various regions of the country much like how the Germany Project divided their country. I asked various members of the group to see if they'd be interested in joining the teams as part of a check-in. With a lot of people reporting in, it's now time to reveal the teams for the project. Ready? Good!

The teams are:

Northwest Italy: Lombardy, Piedmont etc.

Northeast Italy: Venice and surrounding areas.

Central Italy: Lazio, Tuscany etc.

Southern Italy: Calabria, Campania etc

Islands: Sicily and Sardinia

From what I understand, each team will have a leader and the teams themselves will work on profiles of people from those areas. For example, if you're like me and you have an ancestor or a relative from Calabria, you'd be working on that page. Of course you can overlap. There's no one saying you can't help each other out. We're all about collaboration.

That brings me to my next point. We MIGHT need to enlist the help of the Notables and EuroAristo people in creating a team to handle the Italian Notables like Leonardo di Vinci. But, that's an issue for another time.

Right now, as project coordinator for the Italy project, I am asking for volunteers for the teams we have now and any suggestions you might have going forward. This is a huge undertaking and I hope people join various teams. Don't forget. You can join more than one and if you have questions, let me know! And of course we will add more teams at a later date.

Ciao!

I'm on the Islands Team and I just need to get my backside in gear LOL! I'm not sure exactly where to start but, with a little direction, I'd be glad to help in any way that I can!

Just let me know and I'm on board.
Hey, Connie. I have you down for that. Don't worry. Basically, we just need to keep working on the profiles and maybe help with category clean-up. We have a lot of category clean-up to do.
OKie Dokie!
I would like to be a part of the Northeast project.
All set, Kaylee!
Dear ALL

Several Italians from the northern region (Belluno, Padova, Rovigo, Treviso, Verona, Venice and Vicenza) immigrated to the region of the fourth Italian immigration colony in Brazil (Cities: Silveira Martins, Nova Palma, Faxinal do Soturno, Ivorá, Dona Franscisca and Pinhal Grande), immigration that took place at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. I am part of other trees on other sites that have more than 30,000 immigrants and their descendants living in Brazil. I am gradually consisting and migrating the information to wikitree. This project proposed by Chris Ferraiolo is very interesting, I do not know if this information that I bring can somehow help in dividing the regions or even enter another project on immigration. When I saw this project, I immediately thought about this historical section. My paternal great-grandparents are from Vicenza and Verona, would these communes belong to the venice and surroundings team? how far are these surroundings?

Regards.
Ciao, Leonidas!

First thing you'd need to do is join the Italy project here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/864503/joining-the-italy-project-benventuti

We've created basic teams for now and we have room to add more teams at a later date. This would definitely include Italians in Diaspora or in other areas of the world. If you'd like to join the project and join that team, you'd be most welcome.

We are definitely open to adding more teams. We're starting with the regions for now and we hope to expand.

Since Venice and Verona are in the northeast, you'd be on that team.

Look for more teams to be added soon!
Hi, I would like to be on the islands team. My husbands father was from Torre Archirafi, Catania Sicily. Surname Costanzo
Hey all, my family is from the Campania area and if I could be of help please let me know.
First thing you should do is join the Italy project here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/864503/joining-the-italy-project-benventuti
Yay! I'm so glad there's an Italy Project now!!

I am half Italian and have been looking for my families roots for a while now. It has been very hard for me to find info on my grandparents but I now have a list of Surnames and a Family Tree of my family, my grandparents were from Naso, Messina, Sicily.
It's a great project! We'd be happy to have ya! =D

Hi Leônidas Volcato Descovi Filho

I have a side note to that. In my visit to Chiavenna, i met a scholar who was documenting Italian migration from the area to the US. Many documents tell us that the person has left Italy. Because of this I decided to start tracking them by putting them in a category of their own, so that at a later date their destination and life could be researched after they reached the US.

How do I join the Island Sicily project?
The first thing you have to do, Shawn is join the Italy project here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/864503/joining-the-italy-project-benventuti

Then join the Islands team.
Hello, I just joined wikitree but I would be interested in working in North-Western Italy project.

How does it work?
Ciao, Ugo.

First you need to join the Italy project itself before being assigned to a team. Here's the thread: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/864503/joining-the-italy-project-benventuti

Why is the Italy Project page unlisted?  Equally, why is the image for Project Italy privacy protected?

(I've just created a profile for an American Notable who was Italian born, hoping for some help on sourcing and  family connections as Italy isn't even close to my extremely over-stretched comfort zones.)

Hi, Mel!

I think I know what happened. That is an old link. Here is the project page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Italy

I am not sure what happened to the image. If you want me to add Italy tags in, link me to the profile and I will see what I can do.

ANY help on Felix would be good.  I have found the names of his parents, but not the mother's maiden surname.  If I could get more information on the parents, we might have half a chance of getting him Connected sometime this year. cheeky  (I do not expect to get him Connected by tomorrow (Star Wars EPOW), but it'd be nice to get as much added as is possible for any future event.)  He was born in Roccacasale, Abruzzo, Italia.  (I used Italia, rather than Italy, because that's what he would have used.)  I also found his immigration info, which gave his name as Felice (as did his marriage document), so Felix was obviously the Anglicised version.

He has two surviving siblings, and two surviving children (plus his widow), so I am stuck there so far as connection possibilities go.

I will see what I can do in a bit. Thanks, Mel!
I've attached two of his children — one, a baby, the other his only son.  Cannot find any mention of a marriage for the son (no spouse, or children listed on his obit — only nieces and nephews), so there are no Connection lines from either of these children.

I have no idea if the parents also emigrated, as there is no mention of them on Felix's immigration passenger list.  It is possible they did, but at a later date, as there are photos of an older woman who looks very much like the mother of my Italian friend back home, and I don't think they took teeny babies over to Italy.  (Some of those photos may also be of his sister (still living).)
Well, the first thing I am doing is fixing the category. Notable or not, he shouldn't be in the Abruzzo category. He should be in a lower one. Fixing now. =D
That's fine.  I have ZERO knowledge of the categories for Italy, and simply looked for anything that might fit.  This is why I asked for help!  :)
And done. =D There's not much else I can do right now.
I'll let you know if I find anything more on the parents, or siblings.
Thanks! =D

Please put me on Northwest Italy: Lombardy, Piedmont etc.

by Lance Martin G2G6 Pilot (125k points)

Hi Chris, kudos for this, I'd like to join the Northwest and Central teams

And you are added! =D

Ciao Northwesterners.

I have been working for a while on Sondrio/Lombardy.

I wanted to share a source that the rest of you may or may not know about.

Family Search has images that have never been indexed for our areas. Sondrio's is here

They may look intimidating, but fairly easy to navigate.

My family comes from the valley where Chiavenna is, so I have been working on this area pretty exclusively.

A sample of how I have been approaching the unindexed source can be found here.

The Births 1866-1910 link brings you to the microfilm.

The Index link brings you to a subgroup. Within the subgroup I have created a work plan to index the images and to put them into wikitree.

Of course this works best with smaller communities.

The year link on the Index page brings you directly to the names of that year once they are entered, the names will bring you to the actual individual.  After the year link I have made a comment as to wether or not I have entered the individual into wikitree. It is basic information, Name, Birth Year and Location. This is easily entered off the the page listing all the births of the current year. Then, the plan is to go back to individuals and glean the rest of the information from the record (birthdate, father, fathers age, paternal grandfather, mother, mothers age, maternal grandfather) and whatever else is possible. Once that has been entered, a link from the name to the wikitree record. It is a big project, but has proved valuable. Often I find names on Ancestry with the last name and a year, with my index I can find the person very quickly (the year is often one or two off).

This work plan is designed to work on multiple records at once without regard to how they are related to you. There will be people who already exist in Wikitree that were put there, but the work plan does not reflect them. The goal of the work plan is to batch input.

Another source which has proved invaluable is this surname distribution website. If you type in the surname in the region, you will find what town the surname is found in. This has also proved invaluable in locating records.  You can also use it to triangulate should you know a specific couple that was married in Italy, you could enter both surnames and see what town both of those surnames are found in.

buona giornata

Ben fatto, Lance e grazie per il tuo capolavoro!
Thanks Karen. If any of the Northwesterns are interested, I suggest we form a team for the a-thons and tackle a project together.
I have a better idea, Lance. I formed a Team Italy for the thons. You can both  join here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Team_Italy-1

I created the team for us. Check it out.
I think it is the same not better...thanks for sharing
LOL. No problem. Please join! We'd love to have ya!
Hi Lance, thanks for sharing your Sondrio work - nice idea to index those records. I know that it is a hard slog with those Sondrio records - I recently was going through the San Giacomo Filippo (next to Chiavenna) records online for a cousin's family (Fibbioli and Rogantini surnames). And in your Mese index I see a few Sondrio surnames (Abram, Triaca) that often pop up on my Bergamo husband's DNA match list so your index will be helpful - often these DNA matches with Sondrio connections were immigrants to US who went to work in mines - if I can connect any of them back to the profiles you have started, I will make updates.  Grazie mille!
Hi Susannah.  I have done lots of Rogantini additions. There are a few Rogantini/Martinucci marriages in Piuro. Maybe we are cousins.

Hi Chris!  You sent me a message a bit back, and I asked where I'd be placed if my family was from Pascelupo, Umbria?  I'm guessing the Central team?  Pascelupo is on the border of the Umbria "border" from what I can tell on google maps.  It's east of Gubbio.   If the Central Italy Team is the right answer, then that's where I'll be.   The Lupini family runs deep in Pascelupo.
by Caroline Verworn G2G6 Mach 9 (91.6k points)
Yep. That's the central team and I have you down as a member! =D Thanks for replying!

My grandparents were from southwest Italy, from Stigliano and Cirigliano.

Hi!

Many of my ancestors all came from the Sulmona area of the Abruzzo region, so I could join in whichever team is focusing on that area.

Best,

Alex

Dear Chris,

Please put me in the Northeast - my husband's family are from Prov. Pordenone.  Are we the only ones in the Northeast?  I have returned to transcribing, but not much volume.  And I am studying Italian online!  Grazie. -NGP
by Nanette Pezzutti G2G6 Pilot (126k points)
You are in the Northeast. Don't worry. We have others there, too! Graziemille!

Chris, I'm also like it to join the Northeast region.

Okay. Added you!

May I also be added to Southern Italy, as I have recent ancestors from Calabria? Thank you!

by Wendy Callahan G2G6 Mach 2 (20.5k points)
No problem! =D

Calabria? Whereabouts?
I'm sorry, I meant Campania. This waking up early because the school year has started is getting to me! xD

And thank you very much!
That's okay. I also have ancestors in Campania. And it's still counts as Southern Italy!
What is involved in joining a team? What is it I must be able to do to help? My husbands grandparents came from Reggio Calabria where I think every CONDOMITTI on earth started out and I'd love to help with that if I could.

Diane
First off, you should probably join the Italy project: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/864503/joining-the-italy-project-benventuti

Secondly, all you need to do is work on profiles in that area.

That's all you need to do.

Good day

My farher-in-law was from Italy (Rittonori) and we need to follow my wiges roots back to Trento where he was born. We know very little about his origin and family.

We would like to join the North Eastern team if that covers the area. It might be wise to also collaborate with the   North Western team.

I'd like to join the Southern Team to continue the Research I've started into my maternal ancestry in the Chieti Province of Abruzzo.  Little luck with tracking our Italian heritage through the usual channels but tips from fellow Wiki members have been very helpful.

Ciao Chris,

My mother's paternal side came from Torino, Piemonte, Italy! The immigrant ancestor is Antonio Girogio, whose father was Andrew (Andrea) Giorgio. The surname was Anglicized about 1890 to George.

I am time limited; nevertheless, I would like to join the Northwest Italy: Lombardy, Piedmont etc. team. I also work with the Notables and EuroAristo groups. I am pre-1700 certified, but not pre-1500 certificed (although I would like to be at some point).

BTW...Antonio Giorgio married Eliza Dunstone Stephens (emigrated from Cornwall) about 1888. I am on the England Team and work frequently with Cornwall ancestors. See photo of Antonio Giorgio (Anthony George) below:

Hey.

The first thing you'll want to do is to join the Italy project. Do so here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/864503/joining-the-italy-project-benventuti
I'll do that, thak you!
No problem. You are now added. And we accept anyone of any skill level. Do you want to join a team?
Ouch, I missed your question! Hi, Chris! Greetings from Buenos Aires!

Yes, of course I do! Please place me in the NE region or wherever you think I'll be useful. My 50% italian ancestors came mostly from Lombardy. Spanish is my native language, but I manage English, Italian and a bit of German.
Okay. You are in. Welcome aboard! =D Gracias!

I will put you in NE and in Diaspora if you are interested.
Please do! :) (And tell me where to start haha)

Well, there's a huge mistake for you... Lombardy is Northwest...blush

LOL. I will edit! Sorry!
