Wood family in Melbourn 1788

One of my relatives was William Wood of Melbourn (Cambridge) born 1788. I was told by a relative that there were 2 brothers who owned the village, but lost it playing cards. She died before I could ask for any further details. It looks a possibility because he appeared to leave Melbourn and his property and went to Royston, where he appeared to be quite poor.

Any help appreciated!

Hi Duncan! Welcome to WikiTree!

We might be related; there are rumours of Woods in the ancestry of this ggg grandfather of mine from the same general area.  I'm looking forward to you getting your branches on WikiTree so we can see if there is a connection.

I would like to help answer your question, but i always find it easier if there is an existing profile and if the profile shows the sources you have already found.  I feel pretty silly sometimes, spending time finding out basic things about the ancestor and sharing them, only to have the person asking the question tell me that they knew all that already.  So if there isn't a profile built yet, i usually ask for one to be started, and then we all can pitch in with our sources.

In this case, is it census information that leads you to think he moved to Royston?  If it is his death cert, actually Royston was the town of record for BMD stuff happening in the surrounding smaller towns as well.  My rellies all look like they were born/married/died in Royston, but actually it was Guilden Morden or Litlington etc.
