Changing a married name to a birth name

Last week I added a woman, who I've always known by her last name, which is also the same name she's known by in history, but just recently I've learned that she married at a very young age and that name is actually her Married name, and not her Birth name.

So my question is this, would I better to Edit her last name in her profile (which worries me a bit)...or create a second profile with her correct Birth name, and then merge the two profiles into one? I'm much more comfortable with the second option, but also concerned that I might be causing more of a problem than I already have?

You don't create a duplicate profile.  If you are the profile's manager, or on the trusted list, you edit the last name at birth field and fix it there.

The approach is to indeed change the 'Last Name at Birth'. Only the profile manager can do that. Please add a description with the change that explains the name change.

This will create a new URL to the profile, meaning the name of profile will change from MARRIEDNAME-number to LNAB-number.

The same will happen if you do the merge, but that will make changes to 2 profiles instead of 1.

You might want to check other profiles where you might have used the old link to her profile, eg [ [MARRIEDNAME-number] ] and preferably change those as well for clarity.

You want to do a search to see if the 'birth' name might already be on wikitree, so then you would merge into that one.
Good catch Linda. Yeah, important to do.

You should never knowingly create a duplicate just to get round a difficult situation.
