Question

I'm doing some work on the ancient Whalesburgh family, who were connected with the manor of Whalesborough in Cornwall, England.  I see that there is no identified place by that name any more, although the name lives on in Whalesborough vacation cottages near Marhamchurch and Bude.

What would be the appropriate location category -- if any -- to give this profile?

Of course, I assume you know the meaning of the place name, as in the 'fort of the Walls' as in the Cornish. I looked at this place many years ago (my family coming from Stratton and Marhamchurch, etc.) and coloured up an OS map with Celtic place names and Saxon ones. The Bude area has a mixture of both but from Whalesborough onwards Celtic names tend to dominate. So I think the now lost(?) hillfort was literary the boundary here where the Tamar is so small.

The name means "Welsh" (as in foreigners, not today's meaning of Welsh) fortified town and is an Anglo-Saxon name, not a Celtic one. I think you're right about it being just over a territorial boundary though.

Yes! Your right, I think I was just keeping it simple, as I didn't actually say it was a celtic placename, but I can see how it might look that way. :)

working on family tree and ran across a number of Whalesboroughs... A few questions regarding Thomas Whalesborough. Whalesborough-33 and Whalesburgh-13 appear to be the same person. One references his wife as Matilda (or Maud) Bowes, daughter of Sir William Bowes - not sure of the reference. I also see reference in may online trees that his wife was Matilda Pilkington, daughter of Sir Roger Pilkington. Pilkington-53 being one of them.
