Colonel James Washington - cousin to George?

+2 votes

Have you heard of Colonel James Washington? (by the way, the cousin-to-George-Washington is at the moment only a family legend.) He owned a sugar plantation on the island of Nevis in the West Indies, and married the well-connected Miss Blackmore.

He also had a daughter, Mary Blackmore Washington, who was born on Nevis in 1794. She eventually married sculptor Abraham Stumbles and thus earned herself a place in the Stumbles Name Study.

Do any of these names sound familiar to you? Or could anybody point me in the direction of where to look for relevant records for them?

They are indeed.  I have completed the merge.  Thank you for pointing it out.

A couple of things that I noticed....her name is Mary Blackmore on the birth/baptism records of her children....she is never Mary Washington.

Also, as George was born in 1732, and if James is his cousin...there would be about 30 difference in their ages.   We know the George's dad had only one brother, not a lot of cousins to be had.   I did look through the descendants of George's Grandfather to see if there was someone close, but, alas....nothing to help you.

Oh well.  It was only a family legend, after all.  There are probably oodles of people who claim cousinship with George LOL.
I am still looking....people even today call "distant relatives" "cousins"
