I believe the 4 sons theory was published in the 19th century in a newspaper out west, but I can't reference the source right now. There are clearly Scottish and Irish Hughey trees, but since Irish Hughey's were immigrants to Scotland once upon a time, perhaps both lines will merge at some point.
