Hi all, my name is Leslie Schwalm, and I'm working with Sonya Jackson to write a short bio of Dr. Johnson. I serve on the Johnson County, Iowa committee to change the eponym for our county from a slave-owning vice president to Dr. Johnson. This family tree is fabulous and very, very helpful--the most detail I've seen anywhere, including her wiki bio. I have a couple of questions. Has anyone seen records for the the sale or dispersal of her parents' or uncle's land? Does anyone know anything about Adam and Martha Johnson--I assume they were enslaved, since they do not show up in the 1860 census. Where did Richard and Henry get the money to purchase their farms??? Also, does anyone know anything about Henry C and Louisa Burton--their back story, their (presumed) experience of slavery? Finally, do you know anything about Dr. Johnson's experience at her teaching positions? She must have had a tough road--the gender dynamics as a female professor at the time were very challenging. I've contacted Cheyney and they are sending some archival materials about her professional life there. All respect to those of you who do this hard but important work of recovering this important history! p.s., I am a history prof at the University of Iowa and department chair for the department of Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies.

I have no additional information. I started her profile here after the petition to change the namesake of the county went to the county Board of Supervisors. Others on Wikitree did great work with her profile, and I am hoping other people may be able to point you to more information.

I have added a profile for Henry C Burton including what I could find. He was a minister and fought in the Civil War.
