GEDCOM import improvement to WT from GRAMPS

I have over 1100 entries in GRAMPS and as I check sources in family groups I then upload them to WT. Some of these persons in the upload file already exist in WT. For a cross reference I have copied the WT URL and have it as part of the GRAMPS profile. It shows in the GEDCOM file as:

2 FORM URL

2 FILE https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sellers-2984

Could an enhancement be made to automatically "match" these records when processing the file? It may mean faster processing time and benefit us all. Maybe a little processing of the string might be required to verify the person exists (error check)

I do something similar using Family Tree Maker. In my case it appears in the GEDCOM file as:

1 EVEN https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bond-6341

2 TYPE Web Address

If the enhancement is made, which I agree would be nice, it would be good if it could cope with a range of possible formats.

Isn't this matching already covered when you put your GEDcom through GEDCompare? I thought that's what it was supposed to do; check to see if there was already a profile here.

Yes you are correct, it will find the profile and list any others also. You then have to find the right profile and select "match". I'm requesting that the program "match" automatically based on the "www.wikitree.com" ULR it finds in the file. Would save many clicks of the mouse.

I use Gramps as well (love it actually) and also mark profiles that I have found with the WT URL. So one side of the screen is the relationship manager in Gramps, the other is the GedMatch screen of Wikitree. I use the person IDs then to see where I am.

It would be great of the import of GedCom would use the extra information, and it shouldn't be too hard. (But I am not programming WT). I personally use the Notes field, type 'link' for the WT URLs.

To be honest though, I think that Gramps should be taught to deal with information from Wikitree. That can be done with a Gramps Widget. Why? Because Gramps is really nice for research (no LNAB troubles) and Wikitree is really good for showing the results of that research.

What would a WikiTree Grampslet do?
Well, it could use the API to call in hard data like date/places and compare that to the data in Gramps?

Or Suggest family members? With the API you can request the IDs of the near family members

Or suggest hits based on your tags?

I can think of a lot of things. Just need the Python code to connect the two ...
Based on an option flag, the program would just mark the records matched thus you could see if any GRAMPS records are not recorded in WT.

Another option could be to match the records only if the major fields are also a match. This would give you a list of records that need to be investigated for corrections. I would not include the free text portion of the record as this would never match the GEDCOM file.
