In March 1915 at the age of 21 years & 6 months, Samuel joined the Royal Fusiliers, after basic training he Embarked from Southampton to France 1st December 1915. Samuel was promoted to L/Corperal on 13th July 1916 but was later demoted back to private. Later that year on 14th October, Samuel received gunshot wounds to his right leg and was admitted to 2nd Canadian hospital and later transferred to England on 24th of that month, he went to the Northern General Hospital, Lincoln, where he stayed 'till the 11th of November. When he was discharged he returned home for recupertion, as was reported in the Wrexham Leader of that date. He returned to France on 15th June 1917 but was only there for 13 days before being returned to England untill 23 October when he returned again to France. He was there until he was killed in action on 23rd August 1918.
