October 2 - October 5 — the start of Family History Month — is our fifth annual "Source-a-Thon"!

This three-day event is for a good cause (sourced genealogy!), there will be lots of door prizes donated from around the genealogy community, and it will be lots of fun.

The marathon starts Friday, October 2 at 8 AM (ET) and ends Monday, October 5, 8 AM (ET) but you don't need to participate the whole time (!). If you can join for any of it, please post an ANSWER below saying either the team you'd like to be on (see the team list) or your genealogical interests or geographic location and we'll assign a team before the start of the event.

Is it correct that unsourced profiles that do not have the Unsourced category count, as per Source-A-Thon post from 2017 ?

A quick search for suggestions 802 (empty profile) and 803 (almost empty profile) show some certainly unsourced profiles

This is the location to click in the original post. You should also state team or area of preference.

(Old screencap, but the answer link is still the same.)

Sign me up for the Twisted Thistles!

Given the discussion here, could you please add standard timezone times in UTC/GMT to the original post? And project page?

I believe it just has to be before Aleš makes the final run for the THON. I think he starts that wednesday so I'd say by the 29th of september to be safe.
Am I supposed to get a race number?  When will they be assigned?
Hi, Cheryl -- we're chipping away at them. We'll make sure you get your number before the 'thon starts. ;-)
If no one has answered yet....if you are clicking on the "answer" with the blue arrows...I did that too! you have to click on your own "answer" link. If you have done that already, pretend I didn't say anything LOL!
Hi! I'd like to join Team Italy this year. Thanks!
Concetta,

you must leave an ANSWER to be registered, not a comment.

Click the     link.

How do we add the badge image to the source a Thon template as link to the one displayed in the feed does not appear to work?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Source-a-Thon

You bib image. In order to add it, you'll need to download the image (which was posted in a comment under your response to the Source-a-Thon registration post), and upload it to your profile, then grab that image name and put it here. If you leave it empty, it will simply not include the badge image.

Evidently we are not at the point where we can add the image from one central place. When you upload the image to your profile it WILL complain it is a duplicate. You must tell it to do it anyway. This assures massive duplicated images all over wikitree. I guess it is what it is. (make sure you use YOUR new image name, not the original. like this "bib=Tibbetts-150-1.png")

Thanks Steven

"then grab that image name and put it here"  sorry,  put it where?

You place the image into the last section of the template, which you post under the Biography heading on your profile.

That was a direct quote from the website link which I also gave you.

{{Source-a-Thon|team=teamname|year=2017|sources=number|bib=Image name as png or jpg}} If you don't add the bib part it will display just the number you enter. put your goal, then change to your actual after the thon.

Thanks I figured out. Is that Some kind of intelligence test so you know who to give the hard cases to and who to give the easy ones too LOL
Eowyn, is ET the same as EDT and therefore 1200 Greenwich Mean Time? Just wanting to work out when we will start in Eastern Australia. Thanks.
Yeah, it would be rather handy to have the times here as GMT/UTC. No need to learn all the abbreviations and calculations then.

@ Gillian - - EDT is not GMT.  Right now EDT is GMT-4

I don't think Eowyn is differentiating between Eastern Standard Time and Eastern Daylight Time.

East coast Aus on standard time is GMT+10.

See also -- Time zones and the Source-a-Thon (2020)

Thanks Melanie for the excellent link. So we start in Eastern Australia at 10pm. Cheers.
Since NZ starts at 0100 on Saturday morning, and Sydney is 3 hours behind NZ, then 10 PM Friday night sounds right to me!! LOL
Steven, Thank you for this info.  It took some plodding through on my part but finally figured out the sticker/bib part.

Looking forward to participating in my first Scan a thon!!
That is in 3 months. This is the SOURCE-a-thon. LOL
Doh!!  You got me....regardless, THANK YOU for all your help...lol

Helpful hint for time zones: I've added a table to ours with the start time in UTC and all the US time zones. See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Tree_Nuts

Feel free to copy it and add it to your team pages with whatever time zones you need, but please don't edit our team page! laugh

Fortunately all of NZ is within ONE timezone, so I dont need this table for the Kiwi crew. But thanks for the offer.

As to translating times for the Hangout schedule, I use my computer clock to do that. It shows both ET and NZT.
Please sign me up. If the Nor'easters have room for me, that would be my team, as that area represents most of my ancestors.

Did I miss the date registering is closing? Can anyone tell me please?

Or do I need better reading glasses? blush

Found the answer in my mail!!!!!!!

Today (Wednesday) is the last day to register for this weekend's big event, our fifth annual Source-a Thon..............

Prepare your family! laugh

:D As they reply instead of answering. laugh

And they will be disappointed if they are excluded of participating.

And we as captains are frustrated as we all like to have as many team members as possible to join the fun!

Commenting and replying won't get people registered.  Only clicking answer will -- and if you wait until the last moment to comment or reply, then come back later to answer, you run the risk that the thread will be closed to answers and you will miss out.
Yes, but if people want to join, they shouldn’t be scolded for joining on the last day. Obviously the answer vs reply is confusing as MANY have to be told to go back and click answer instead.

I like adding sources, but don’t want to be on a team of hostile people.
Cara, I think you are mis-reading our concern as something it is not.  Noone posting here is hostile.

I just want to let everyone who has commented to know that if you subsequently added an ANSWER to the post, I have hidden your above comment.

If I didn't find an ANSWER for you, your comment is still above, and you'll need to take a minute to add an ANSWER before midnight Eastern time (US) today (30 Sep), a.k.a. 0400 UTC (1 Oct).

Thank you SO much for joining in. We're looking forward to another fun weekend with you!!! laughheartlaugh

Probably because we thought we were already registered and then find out at the last minute we aren't (or we don't know if we are registered. To be honest I still don't know if i am registered. I think i must be because when i add sources I see a 'challenge tracker' come up. but its very confusing.
HI Cara, I hear you. Its purely a communication breakdown is all. the information about sourceathons is not particularly clear for novices such as you and me. and the format for joining and responding is just totally lost in a massive long thread. Maybe this is something the site creators can look at - such as streamlining communication processes, and outlining very clearly what we do, how we will k now that our 'application has been accepted' and then the process for ensuring that we do things the 'right way'.  a bit of mentoring doesn't go astray, at the same time, I know that i was made a lot of offers of assistance early and was too busy to take advantage of it. Now i've created the time -i can't find them:D .

We're all still here, Larina.  You just have to ask.  smiley

Actually the Challenge Tracker is always there—there are many different challenges/projects going on all the time. I participated before, but it was easier to join (teams claimed us if we weren’t on a team). The answer vs comment is always a problem though, LOL .
Hi Melanie, I know you are all there :D .. its just working out where to write and ask and so forth. How do we KNOW that we have registered? Is it just by the little note that comes up when we add a source? also I see when i add sources a 'challenge tracker come up' with a prompt to put a comment in .. 2 are blue and 2 are red. So when i add death details, I then see that there are two options (when confirming relationships happens with death details) so i'm making two comments.. is this wrong?? :S
Especially if you are on a cell phone rather than computer it is hard for newbies to understand what is needed to register. I got it after you sent me back to the beginning and said answer not comment, but it was not an obvious step for me. Thank you!
Larina -- you are registered because you "Answered" here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1097927/have-you-registered-for-the-2020-source-a-thon-yet?show=1115175#a1115175

I haven't been able to get through all of the registrations yet, but you answered before the cut-off, so we'll catch you tomorrow & give you your bib number.

It looks like you've chosen the Wizards of Aus team, so Melanie and the rest of her crew will help you find your way around.

Good luck!
Sherry --

You are also registered. Your "Answer" is here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1097927/have-you-registered-for-the-2020-source-a-thon-yet?show=1115108#a1115108

Again, we haven't gotten all the way through the registrations, but you made it in before the cut-off.

I hope you enjoy the 'thon this weekend! We'll be doing videos every 4 hours to keep everyone updated on the progress and will become progressively more silly as we lose more sleep. ;-)

For everyone ... you should be able to find the answers to many of your questions here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Source-a-Thon (which is linked to in Eowyn's original post).

There will also be a G2G thread posted at the start of the 'thon where people can ask questions if they need to.

Your first resource, though, is your team captain and teammates.

Have fun!

How do we KNOW that we have registered?

by Larina Harper

.

In the case of any of the 'Thons (source, connect, scan, clean) - you are registered the moment you post an answer (not a comment, or reply!).  That's it.  That's all it takes to register to play along for a 'Thon.

Of course, selecting a Team with which to play along is helpful, but not absolutely required -- because if you don't state you'd like to be with x-Team, by the end of the registration period, you will be assigned a Team that is thought to be a good fit.

The tracker is always there, but not always for what you are doing at the time.  Tracking for the 'Thons only appears at the time of the 'Thon (source and clean - I'm not sure how scan-a-thon works, as I have not participated - and the connect-a-thon is tracked by other means).

If you are participating in a monthly challenge, or weekend sprint, those would be the options to select on the tracker at the time.

If you've other questions regarding this 'Thon (or the others), feel free to post them to our Team "chat" thread --- The Wizards of Aus Source-a-Thon 2020 chat so we won't be thought as hijacking this one.  smiley

Wow! 583 people signed up. Is this an all time record?smiley

I *think* the first year we had > 600, but this is definitely a bunch more than we've had the past couple of years!
Thanks Julie -i'm busting the nut here, in between tasks and hoping I'm doing it properly. Having a ball. i'd be interested to know why its so easy to find other peoples sources when its so hard to find our own ancestors???! like whats that about?? Anyway all good, i just hope that if i do something wrong people will come and tell me "nicely' and I'll have to go back and clean up my own mess *sigh*.. fun in the meantime. Enjoy all:)
Bea I would help your team but i'm relatively new and not real confident outside of the areas i've already been looking. no doubt as I get more skills I will be able to help more.. good luck finding people:)
Wouldn't it be nice to have a small piece of software dealing with this registration? Instead of using a FAQ system?
It would, Michel -- are you volunteering?? ;-)

Well... not sure one would allow a newbie to make such changes cheeky. But who knows...

laugh

Maybe your suggestion will put a bug in someone's ear.

Mum Julie, Michel showed us at the DRP he is able to make (small) miracles happen.

So cherish the bug! And mark his ID! (But do not steel him away from us! winklaugh

I'm registred as #489 but there is no sign of my participation anywhere. Not in the team I signed up (Spic-n-Span Scandinavians; I added my-self on that page but doesn't seem to change anything) and not showing up in the tracking lists. Feels a little bit left out...

Hi Ben, try posting here to see if it can be sorted out - https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1116016/do-you-have-2020-source-a-thon-questions
OK thanks will do!
Shucks! I missed it!...again..  Bummer..maybe in 2021..or are we doing these more than once a year?  Thx
The next thon will be in 2021...Scan-A-Thon, We will see you then!
