Hear Ye, Hear Ye

If you are interested in people who are famous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post to this thread and ask for help, or if you want to tell us whom you have successfully connected up, or if you want to join the Notables Project and get a badge.

Besides checking out the Notables Project page, don't forget to take a look at the Notables List page, where you can find lists of Notables who have profiles which aren't yet connected to the main tree. (For ideas on way to connect unconnected people and branches, see the Hints and Tips on the Connectors Chat page.)

Please remember to concentrate on those Notables who have already passed (died), so that we can see their profiles. If you create a profile for a living Notable, that profile WILL GO UNLISTED and no one can see it except for the PM and anyone on the trusted list!

And remember - Notables should have a Wikipedia page at the very least to qualify. But an entry in the country's NATIONAL Whose Who or a NATIONAL Biography  is acceptable as well. And they should be DEAD!

How appropriate! I found a (remote) link to George Romney the artist.  He is on my list to be created and connected in the next connectathon.
by Madelaine Kirke G2G6 Mach 2 (27.5k points)
The next Connectathon? That one is in next July. I hope you don't wait that long
I have nearly 2000 people to add from my own research - Romney is not urgent.

There are some posthumous notables that are too 'wide open' security wise. This is not about control but reducing 'the bloat' by people that do not check their facts, use ALL CAPITALS all the time, just blindly accept all prompts from other Tree vendors then Gedcom in another lot of jumble that needs sorting etc etc (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:UploadGedcom).

I would like to join you all and get a badge. I have blood lines back to 1300's in England (Nobles and Gentry) and I have worked with/for Notables in the music industry. Just because someone has passed plus they are notable should not mean they are treated the same as passed and not notable. This is obviously because of fanatics and fakery. Living notables need special protection on Wikitree (seeing as it is the defacto Tree) to be able to do their job professionally and effectively.

by Living Swift G2G6 (9.0k points)
Hi Philip! Welcome to the Notables Team!

We do our best to collaborate on the shared tree with any deceased Notable, so that our researchers can work together to collect facts, build profiles and biographies, and ultimately connect the Notables to the global tree. And as you mentioned, we also protect our living Notables, as any living Notable on the tree is covered by a level of Privacy that protects them from anyone being able to see their profile other than the Notables Project Account and the Profile Managers.

Once a Notable passes away, many members of the team pitch in on a newly deceased Notable by adding to their profile and contributing to improving and connecting that profile. While there are some profiles that remain protected due to significant controversies, most are opened up for editing by all and we have a number of individual researchers who will both watch for and report upon any concerns. We try to work together to both build and protect those Notable profiles.
Thank you for your prompt reply, I am reassured now. Can I raise the question of if there is any period between Notables death press releases and action here? I think it would be the right thing to do to have say 3 months delay or if no delay have a slow 'ramp-up' to a full dead notable entry. This is only for the human factor or grieving direct and close family.
While this subject comes up from time to time, there is no specific delay in place as it relates towards the creation or editing of recently deceased Notables. Others have recommended this approach in the past, however, at least an equal number if not more have also requested the opportunity to begin working on their profiles as soon as possible. While some believe it is honoring to a recently deceased Notable to delay work on any profiles for a period of time, others believe that it is more honoring to show their respect by creating a well-done profile and family tree for the same. While we all grieve differently, it is difficult to tell someone that they're wrong for wanting to approach things differently than we might agree upon.

Beyond the fact that it may be challenging to judge others on their approach towards recently deceased Notables, it is also technically impossible to prevent. Living Notables often have a profile already created and in a Private place that would be changed upon a Notable's death. If we choose not to put a date of death on these for a period of time, others will presume that no profile exists, and create duplicates and begin work on them. Even if we put a date of death and restrict who can work on it, there is no way to prevent someone from creating a duplicate and working on it until the other is opened up for editing. Most of these are created by accident (at least 99% of the time), and ultimately we will merge them as our goal is one profile per person, but it does create a mess that needs to be cleaned up.

So realistically, it is more collaborative, more technically feasible, and best practice to not establish any specific recently deceased Notable moratorium so that we can keep the system clean and allow those who wish to honor Notables by helping to establish their profile and tree to do so at their own pace.

If there is a (or in Tech speak then there should be no absence of a stateable opposite, namely or . This is not logical to non Tech minds but it stops errors (behind the scenes) in that there is no 'blank space' or 'no label' but an identifiable handle to grab or GUID (Globally Unique IDentifier). This does not mean there has to be an output. It just stops a "well if they are not a  then they must be, by default, a.....oh shoot, hang on, where shall I put them? hmmm.....I'll have to take a while to think about this" process.

by Living Swift G2G6 (9.0k points)
Maybe this should be in the Tech' category? Please move or advise me and I will re-position :-)
The Living Notables category was created by the Categorization project, and is only in use for a small subset of the total living Notables in the system. Creating a separate Deceased Notables category would be equally limited in use. We have many thousands of Notables in the system, and while we might be able to sweep through all existing profiles and update them once as a clean-up for these types of categories, there would be no way to enforce having them set up on future profiles.

I don't have a problem with proposing this type of new category to the Categorization Team as long as we acknowledge the challenges we may face in both ensuring all existing profiles get updated as well as what approach we may need to take in order to ensure all future profiles would be created with these what would be required categories.
Just a small clarification: the category "Living Notables" was created by someone who is not a member of the Categorization project. The project was not involved in this at all.

Personnally, I do not recommend putting living notables in that category because, unless they have a very common name, it makes them identifiable. What I would recommend is adding the Notables project, or at least an active project willing to oversee the profile, as co-manager until the profile can be opened.

I am speaking on this to support what Isabelle said. Our project did not create "Living Notables" and, personally, I think it's not a needed category. WikiTree definitely doesn't need Category:Dead Notables. I mean, why not label all of the profiles Category:Dead Persons then? Many of the profiles are of deceased persons and we already know they are deceased. I'm sure that since I said we have no need for this (dead notables) as a category, someone would come up with some obscure reason I didn't consider, so I am ready for this reason to be added here. ("Nat, you ninny, having Dead Notables will help me group my deadwinknotable relatives so I can find them when I need them.")

My apologies - I had thought the Categorization project was involved with that one, even if an official team member wasn't directly involved with the creation.

I would agree that if the category went away, it wouldn't bother me in the least. I agree wholeheartedly that it only serves to help provide clues towards identifying living Notables in the system, which I agree as well is not desirable. It would be much better to simply put the Notables tag on them, add the project (or another project if appropriate) to them and leave them be until they pass.

Hi Scott, nobody from Cat. Project has been "officially" working on ANY of the Notables cats. We did create a "Location, Theme" naming scheme and some of us have worked on many of the unused or little used country categories within notables to use, say, "Italy, Notables" instead of "Italian Notables". It's wise to check with projects before making such changes, though, since they may have reasons for "adjective vs. noun". smiley Some rogue "hobbyist categorists" (read that as people who like to tinker in categories but are not project members) have done some changes on their own and sometimes that goes by unnoticed, even though we read the feed. (I read the feed daily, but I don't always go back to the last 500 changes!)

If you would like to go away, we can definitely make that happen. The trouble is, if it's been added via the Living Notables in the template, EditBot won't get to it and the category will remain in the Manual Cleanup EditBot category.

Let's give this to the end of the month, and if anyone has any objections to removing the category, please let us know here in this this thread. Please express why you feel this category should exist as well. Note that a significant reason to remove it is that it runs counter to privacy rules intended to help to obscure the identity of any living person. I do understand that there is a desire to avoid duplicates, but if the project is added to the profile as Manager or co-Manager, then it would be the project responsibility to address any merges. You can also "ask" if any profile has been created for a living Notable and the project can check, but best practice is to "NOT" create profiles for living Notables since they are typically not direct relations and for the most part, we shouldn't be creating living profiles of those who are not within our near family tree. There are some exceptions, so this isn't a "rule", but a good guideline.
I apologise in assuming it was created officially.

The famous magician Harry Houdini is now connected! I started from his brother Dash, to his  wife's Fozzard family in England and got great help from another Connector, Carol (Winnton) Keeling. Thanks very much !
by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (293k points)
I forgot to mention an interesting sidenote. Harry Houdini's brother, Dash, adopted the surname Hardeen, and named one of his sons "Harry Houdini Hardeen"; and the last one's son currently hosts the television series "Houdini's Last Secrets". The latter married a Navajo Indian and their children are enrolled members of the Navajo Nation.
Nice work on Harry!! Even better that it brought a few more famous persons into the tree. Thanks!

lol - wow - I had forgotten she was a Bond girl. And when I looked her up, (since I don't watch the show) I had no clue she was also on Game of Thrones. Guess I should put that on my list of things to watch one day.

in the process of attempting to connect Diana Rigg, I created a few notables, the England Notable crew could probably do a better job on these profiles

Not really a September notable, other than that the ABC News Australia just ran an article featuring her : Ivy May Pearce — Australian aviatrix pioneer, one of the first women pilots in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of Australia's first aerobatic pilots; designed many of her own flying outfits, and opened the first fashion boutique on Queensland's Gold Coast.

by Melanie Paul G2G6 Pilot (422k points)

Also not really a September notable, but he deserves a mention — Sir Philip Colville Smith, CVO, Grand Secretary of the United Grand Lodge of England (Freemasons).  He has a DoB page, but I can't access it, so was unable to glean any real information from it.  (Plenty of info on his uncle Montague, though.)

I have some hope that, one day, I will be able to link this Smith-Colville line with my great-grandmother's line, as they, too, have the name Colville scattered throughout the family.

I think her profile is ...

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cha%C3%AEn%C3%A9-22

which needs to be opened now. Thanks
Thank you.

I have sent a PM to Lianne Lavoie, the PM of Aline's profile.
If it is her, her profile is not connected to her parents (unless there are duplicates?). Here is her father: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cha%C3%AEn%C3%A9-44
Lianne Lavoie has not been active on wikitree, since April 2020.

Does anyone know where she is or what has happened to her?
And her profile should not be just open, considering the living relatives.  Might qualify for being green status on privacy.

Robynne, Lianne was dealing with life, last I heard.  Hasn't left us.
Thanks Danielle.

I would like to creat ta notable page for WIlliam Horlick SR creator of Horlick malt drink how do I do it please. I have a wikipedia page for reference can anyone help ???? The aim is put him on my One-Place-Study of the Forest of Dean I am creating
by Steve Davies G2G6 Mach 6 (64.3k points)
You can create a normal profile and make sure the wikipedia source is linked in the sources section.

Just be sure to write something in the Biography section as well - even if it is just a few lines paraphrased from the wikipedia page.

Then add a Notables sticker - copy the below code - it goes above the Biography section

Notables Sticker
The Notables Sticker goes under the ==Biography== line. If the Project was PM, the Notables template would go above the ==Biography== line

Sylvester Stallone's mother has passed away. I have opened her profile for editing.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Scott,

There has to be a date mixup on the profile.

Sylvester's wikipedia page says he was born in 1946

SO is that Marriage date of 1977 for the parents correct?

Or should that be a marriage date of 1946?

Unless they were living in adultorus sin for 30 years? They were catholics right?

OK sorry

I finally read the note on the parents profile about the date problem.

So why do you even add a date if it is clearly wrong?

I would be leaving it blank. Otherwise you just keep getting questions like mine!!
yea wikipedia says Sly's parents married in 1945 & divorced in 1957. They both went on to marry a couple more times.
I adjusted her bio ... I think the 1977 date might be for the marriage of on of their children and the record is showing the parents names, that someone has misread. I will see if I can find the 1977 Florida record on ancestry.com & update the profile if I find it.
Jacqueline "Jackie" Labofish first married about 1945 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA to Francesco Stallone.

That Florida marriage record appears to be a distortion. Ancestry.com shows the 1977 marriage is for a totally different woman with a similar name who married a Francis Julius Maschek. Profile has more details.

The marriage data field still says 1977 Miami, Dade, Florida.

I cleaned that one up. Family Search also has another spouse who has passed away that can be added. I'll see what I can do to get around to that.
