New Sticker Request: Alias

+4 votes

George Ferris Anderson w/alias of Robert Harrison is an example profile. For several years he went by another name.

In order for searches to work, having the first names in first name fields and last names in last name fields, the name displayed on the profile looks a little strange.

George Ferris "Robert" Anderson aka Harrison

This is to start the discussion and propose that a new sticker be created for those who had an alias. Some people may have had several, so that would need to be allowed.

How would having a sticker make the profile show up when you did a name search on the alias?
Hi Chase! Sorry, for any confusion. The sticker isn't for the search. It is so that the fact that they had an alias (or multiple) is highlighted/more visible in the biography.

I noticed you tagged the question with black sheep and we know that some wrong-doers changed their names.  There are  also very many ordinary  English families with alias names. These family alias names sometimes continued over centuries. They were really common in the 17th and 18th c but occassionally continued into the 19th as here Sometimes they existed for centuries. I would certainly like an accepted way to enter these names in a way that could be searched and not break 'rules'. ( it's a bugbear of mine. I can't understand why no-one else mentions this problem

For that reason, I wouldn't like any instant recognition for an alias name  to be associated with aliases for nefarious purposes.

Hi Helen! Thanks for your response. The sticker I'm proposing wouldn't be for recognition, just a way to highlight that there is an alias (or multiple).

An alias was used for various reasons, as the article you shared imparts.

For searches to work, any alternate names need to go into the correct name fields. Alternate first names into the Other Nicknames field and alternate last names into the Other Last Names field. See:
