Please help with a translation for a Czech Marriage record from 1862.

Hello,

I am just starting to get into these Czech marriage and birth records and am a bit lost. I can make out certain names and I can translate all the headings, etc. But the paragraph like descriptions under the bride and groom are tough. Would someone please translate the groom and bride entries for the Frantisek Hirnsal entry (3rd Great Grandfather?)? That should help get me familiar with the styles. Thank you.

I don't speak the language so I can't translate it for you, but I have been working with Czech records long enough that I might be able to help.

24Nov1862   household 45

Frantisek Hirnsal of Hodkov 45 born son of Frantisek Hirnsal (occupation -Glass maker??) of Hodkov, mother Anny Tebazek of Hodkov.

They typically posted their intent to marry three times prior to marriage.  It looks like the 9, 16 and 23 of Nov1862 in this record.

If you think it is difficult now, wait until you get a few more years back and they not only combine Czech with Latin, but they also write in the old "kurrent" script.   A few things I have found helpful.  When going thru records, quite often you can look for the house number to help find records (don't rely on this 100% as they do change houses) -in this case Hodkov 45.   Also, the format is generally similar so look for key words (dcera /czera is daughter,  syn is son,  zenich is groom (sponsae in latin) matkty is mother.  Vidua (widow), pann (mister), panna (virgin), narozeni (birth), oddani (married), zemrél (died) and pohrlen (buried)

So the format is:

Name (occupation) of village, born son of Name (occupation) of village, mother of village.    Other Names in the record are the person conducting the ceremony, sponsors and witnesses.  Sometime relatives, but not always.

A couple occupations you will see a lot:  Sedlak (Farmer) and Chalupnik (cottager /peasant).

Hope this helps !!

Thank you very much for your help. I especially like the tip about the repeating format. It makes sense. One of the things that was throwing me was the freeform appearance of it. I just got done (for now) looking through Italian records and their records are more like forms so you translating is much easier. Then of course there are all the subject modifiers that turn male names female.

But I at least have the Italian experience so I am not stepping into this cold. Google translate and me are getting to be best friends.

Once again thanks, its a great start and sets me on my way.
When you get back a few decades the records will change to the "kurrent" script.  Be sure to go to familysearch.com and watch there three part videos on reading kurrent.   Well worth the few hours !
Thank you for that tip. I have looked at that older script and its wild. Fortunately I am not there yet. I still have some death records to go through and then the Moravec side as so far I have only done the Hirnsall side. I will definitely check out those videos.
