South Carolina records

I am unfamiliar with USA records but was wondering how to find birth or some records to confirm the 1910 Census entry I have in the research notes is the Lois Freeman I am looking for?

It is part of Chadwick Boseman's unconnected family.

I see you have listed a death index for a source.  Have you gotten the actual death certificate.  They often provide more information than the index does.  Same with a marriage record.  Witnesses to marriages are often siblings.
Sadly, only the transcription of the death.  The marriage is a book entry and other than the couple only a 'probate judge' signed it.
I see Chadwick Boseman has now been connected.  Sadly, the only 'source' is the Family Search tree.

For birth records I believe you are out of luck - South Carolina is one of the states that does not have birth records online. It appears the state did not start issuing birth certificates until 1915 (which are available only to immediate family members), so I do not know whether birth records even exist for Anderson County prior to that (if so, there is no evidence in of any availability).

If it were a well-to-do family, one might look to probate or land records; however, the father in the 1910 census record was a tenant farmer, so that is not likely to help. Thus, given that the 1910 and 1920 censuses indicate a large family, I would look for obituaries of any of her siblings naming a Mrs. Mattress as a surviving sibling. No guarantees, though, that you will be able to find obituaries (at a site such as, or incorporated in a memorial at

They did a couple of Delayed Birth Registrations but not Lois.  Good idea on the obits!  I'm tracking the family group in the hope that something pops up to confirm it.  Cheers
