Members of the Australia Project and the Categorization Project are in the process of moving the profiles from the categories Migrants from Scotland to Australia and Migrants from England to Australia to applicable lower level 5 (or 4) migration categories, in line with approved Migration Category Structure. The two categories will be retired once empty.
It would be greatly appreciated, if those two categories were not added to any more profiles. The applicable lower level categories are in the format "Migrants from <county> to <state>". Many have been created, others will need to be created. They need to have the correct Migration CIB. If anyone wants one created, please post here, or on our AP page Categories Waiting to be Added or Renamed.
We are also adding the maintenance category Australia, Immigrant Needs Voyage Category Added to any of the immigrant profiles that don't have a ship category added, for later attention.
Thank you in advance,
Margaret Haining, Categories team leader, Australia Project.
Hi Margaret,
If you know someone was an immigrant, and you know where they were born and where they died, but have no idea when or how they got there, do you want a category for county to state on the assumption that the state they died in was the state they arrived in, or is there a higher level for an unknown migration? Or is it better, just to leave off any migration category until the correct voyage is found?
Similarly, do you want Australia, Immigrant Needs Voyage Category Added added to profiles where the voyage is not known, or is there a better category, or is no voyage category preferred?
Hi Wendy, if you know the county but not the state they arrived, you can use [[Category:<county>, Emigrants to Australia]] example Cornwall, Emigrants to Australia or if you know the state but not the county, [[Category:<state>, Immigrants from England]] example Victoria, Immigrants from England
Definitely use the "Needs Voyage Category Added" category if you know the profile was an immigrant but you don't have a ship. That will be a collection of profiles for later shipping research.
