Do you like intrigue and solving mysteries? Consider adopting Elizabeth Esther Grant, the daughter of Philip Rose Grant, Jr. and Lucy Allen. Elizabeth married Luther Wyman Smith, the son of Sylvester Smith and Rebecca Stevens of New Hampshire. Luther, at age 59, died from injuries sustained in a fall; Elizabeth remarried, marrying Frank Eugene Hoyt, 20 years her junior. Frank claimed on his marriage license, at age 44, to be a physician; however, just twelve years earlier, in 1880, he was a tin wares peddler in Iowa, where his family had migrated from New Hampshire. Just eight years later, Elizabeth died in Walpole, Massachusetts from injuries sustained from a crushed skull, prompting an investigation into whether it was murder or suicide, according to the local newspaper.
Elizabeth and Luther had four children:
Sylvester L. Smith, who married Susan Lavinia Blodgett
George Henry Smith, who married Jessie Frances Severens, Celia M. Kenter, Julia Belle Irons, and Minnie C. Wetmore
Addie L. Smith, who married Robert H. Putnam
Lucy Abbie Smith, who married Elwin Austin Davenport and Myron M. Green
