Owning a name ?

What does it mean that 3 people "own" Joshua Jennings (and, btw, none of the 3 are the right Joshua Jennings, at the root of 1000's of US Jennings trees)
WikiTree profile: Joshua Jennings

Hi Dave,

No one actually owns a profile on WikiTree. When someone creates a new profile (instead of using one that already exists), they become the manager for that profile.

Ideally, each person should have one profile. Sometimes duplicates are created. If they truly represent the same person, they need to be merged. Of course if there are three different people, they should stand alone.

Collaboration between managers is gained by asking to be added to a profile's trusted list.

Let the community know if that answers your question!

Sandi is exactly right. Owning vs. managing is a subtle distinction but it's important: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ownership_and_control

If you see wording anywhere that indicates or implies ownership, let us know so we can fix it.
