I proposed a merge, but it seems to have gone all the way thru without checking with the Profile Manager. What just happened?

5 generation approval, maybe?

Check related profiles for merges, or merge proposals.
I am the profile manager and the first I knew about the proposed merge was that it had happened!!
The G2G https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1095567/proposal-to-not-allow-merges-of-generations-of-ancestors is a proposal to get rid of the WikiTree feature that can extend a single merge approval to allow merging of 5 generations of profiles.

Proposed merge of spouse duplicates

Thanks!
The merge process seemed to work normally for you.  I still don't know why it went right to the end of the process for me
I just had one complete also. Happens every once in awhile, but don't think it is a 5 generation thing. The one I just completed, had duplicate children, and I had to propose the merge for those. Seems if it was a generation situation, the children's profiles should have been free to merge also.

It's happened to me several times.  I think it's when at least one of the profiles is an orphan.

I have proposed merges with one profile being an orphan and it doesn't automatically go to the merge, unless the profile being merged has you as the PM or on Trusted List.  That makes sense since there is no other PM that would need to approve it, though.  Normal merge proposals don't move forward just because one is an orphan though.
Ditto. It has happened to me several times.
