New Extension: WikiTree Toolkit

+35 votes

I have been working on a small set of tools that have been suggested in G2G, but are not yet supported on the WikiTree site.

I would like to introduce a new Chrome Extension: WikiTree Toolkit.

Based on requests for an easy way to copy the profile ID to the clipboard as suggested by Billy Dunn here, and by Kenneth Nellis here, the extension creates a small button in the header next to the Search Person form. This button allows you to select from two options:

  • Copying the Profile ID (e.g., Harris-5439)
  • Copying a formatted Internal Link (e.g., [[Harris-5439|Steve Harris]])

Based on a suggestion from Jillaine to be able to preview inline citations, I have now added references mouseover support.

If you have any ideas for extending the toolkit, or find any bugs, please let me know!

@Scott, looking at this again, I am not sure it would be beneficial to expand the ID Options to the page previews since it will require reading external page data. Also, I noticed that the page previews already include the internal link (and therefor the WikiTree ID).
I just saw that Printer Friendly Bio.  That looks very nice and definitely something that many people have requested.
Amazing tools, thank It works on both Chrome and Edge for me.
@Steve, while it is true the intenal link is on the page preview it is not very easy to copy like it is on the Family Search pop ups.  On FS if you click a name on the pop-up(preview) it takes you there.  If you click the ID it gives you a copy button.

My coding skills are not on par with yours and I am sure there are many diferences in how WT & FS work which may make this difficult or impossible.  I was just saying it would be nice to have.
So Steve after working on some profiles yesterday afternoon...doing edits, I am having a issue after adding the extension that wasn't happening before.  I use google chrome.  When I try to edit text and attempt to put my cursor in a particular spot , it blinks and skips back to the top or end of the paragraph.  The only way to get to the spot I wish to edit is use my arrow over keys, or arrow back.  It also won't let me highlight and delete just a portion of a section, it skips the highlight all the way to the end or beginning of a section.  Is anyone else having these issues?  If I continue to have them probably won't be worth the extra effort to edit profiles and I will take the extension off, it might be a compatibility issue with my antivirus , it didn't seem to want me to install the extension.
@Loretta, I am unable to replicate the issues you mentioned. I did just find a bug where source previews are not displaying in edit mode, so I will work on that and hopefully you can try the next version and the problems will clear up.

I will wait to hear from others in case there is a larger issue needing to be investigated and addressed.
Thanks for the reply and I will await the update and try it. Like I said could be my picky antivirus program

Version 2.0 was just published. Details can be found at: Space:WikiTree Toolkit.

Please make sure your extension has updated, or update in the Chrome Store as needed.

I just updated the Toolkit. I saw the new Toolkit Search Options box at the bottom.  That works great!  Thank you.

I was going to say that I can't find the options to Copy the ID from non-Edit mode or Edit mode, but I found them.  There is no coloring to them and they are down in the Biography area, as seen on the Help page, but it was moved from where it was, so it took a bit to find it.  If those links were Bold, they might be easier to see, but once we figure out, it will work.

Thank you Steveyes

The extension can also be applied to Microsoft Edge. I did that and I love it! Chrome and I are having issues.

Steve, thank you so much for the printer friendly option. That's one that I have wanted for a long time. Do you have a place that you are taking suggestions for that one since it is still in Beta?

You can leave a comment on the WikiTree Toolkit page.

I'm very new to all this  - have recently started learning how to format stuff in WikiTree profiles - am doing my first Orphan profile. I wrote this question to my Orphan Profile Mentor (Pam Moen) and she suggested I write it here.

I'm not sure if this question has already been asked, although I've read all the comments above - I'm new to the formatting language etc - but here goes.

You know the great little Wikipedia gadget by which you can hover over a linked word and a little box drops down in which there's a snippet of information that you can quickly skim over?

Is there any way that this, or something like it can be incorporated into the body of a WikiTree biography text?

Thanks everyone for your patience with this newbie. :)

Hi Frances, is it possible to share a link or screenshot of the feature on Wikipedia you are referencing?
I don't know how. I've seen screenshots on G2G before, but haven't a clue how to attach one here. I'll send you a private e-mail with it attached.

Steve, I'm having trouble with the new version of this app. In its previous life as the Wiki ID Copier it displayed the button and options just as you show above in your post. After installing this new version, I no longer have the button. Instead, it is displaying the two options just below the menu bar:

Is there something I should do to fix the display?

The two options next to the Profile Vitals is the new location. There were requests to make the copying of the ID easier (one-click instead of two) and to minimize the appearance on profiles. This is more in line with the original request so this was rolled out in the latest version.
