In Douglas Richardson. Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families, 5 vols, ed. Kimball G. Everingham (Salt Lake City: the author, 2013), volume II, page 547 FARRER 22, there are three references that supposedly support John or Thomas Bailey being first husband of William Farrar's wife Cicely. We are seeking someone with access to these sources to please check them for what they have to say about John or Thomas Bailey. Can you help?

  • Foster Peds. of Fams. of Yorkshire 1(1)(1874): Farrer ped.
  • Cooke & St. George Vis. of Hertfordshire 1572, 1634 & 1546 (H.S.P. 22)(1886): 53 (Farrar ped.).
  • Dorman Adventurers of Purse & Person Volume 1 (2004): 120-197, 926-953.

Thank you!

Foster is derivative and not very selective, so it wouldn't prove anything, but in any case, it doesn't say anything

William is no 3 on the 4th row.

No 3 on 3rd row in the Visitation

First, thanks, RJ. Much appreciated.

Second, not only do the first two sources not say anything about a Bailey, they also don't say anything about William Farrar of Virginia. There is no further information about the "3. William Farrar" listed.

So now we need to find something with access to Volume 1 of Dorman's Purse and Person.

First Dorman section is for Temperance Baley and descendants.  She married men named Browne and Cocke.  Dorman says Temperance may be a child of Sisley (Cicely) Jordan by a first marriage.  She received land from Samuel Jordan at age 3.

Second Dorman section is Farrar.  In 1623/24 Farrar was living at Jourdans Journey with Mrs Sisley Jordan age 24.  Following a breach of promise case, Farrar and Sisley were married in 1625.

Cicely’s maiden name is unknown.  She arrived in August, 1611,married a man named Baley, and had daughter Temperance about 1617.

No other information on Mr. Baley, but he didn’t live long. She was married to Jordan by 1620.

I have the books if more detail is needed.

Thank you, Kathie.

Conclusion: Richardson says John or Thomas Bailey as possible father of Temperance (and possible first husband of Cicely), and cites three sources NONE OF WHICH supports his claim.

Sigh.
You trying to get flagged for stirring? :)
