Documentation to prove my relationship to Prudence Lanckford and William Clayton.

This Wikitree website is very confusing to me so I apologize ahead of time if I ask too many questions.  I believe that I descend from Prudence Lanckford who was married to William Clayton but I would like documents to prove the relationship.  Are there documents attached to the names somewhere?  I looked on FamilySearch for Prudence and William's marriage record but it isn't available online.  Thank you.  Linda

Great to read you want to prove the relationship, that is the way to go!

If you go to their profiles, you should see a section with sources. There the documents are shown for that profile. Proving your relationship means adding sources to your own profile, that of your parents, grandparents and so on.

If the source is not there, you will need to find it. If those sources don't exist, then the relationship is unproven/untrue/fake (choose your own wording).

The best way is to start by adding your own ancestors and work from there, towards Prudence and William. You did not give their profiles so I personally do not know how  much work is involved in that.
Thank you so much for your help.

Your Prudence Lanckford appears to be https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lanckford-1. According to both the Wikitree profile and her familysearch.org profile, she married William Clayton on 7 Nov 1653 in St Pancras Parish, Chichester, Sussex. The Wikitree profile at footnotes 2 through 6 gives the references for the marriage. The main documentation is the St Pancras parish records; these were abstracted at https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NV4K-63Y, but you need to go to a Family History Center or Affiliate Library to see the actual page from the parish book.

This page shows you who is already attached as descendant (through great-great-grandchildren) to her at Wikitree; you may want to scan this list to see whether an ancestor of yours is already attached.

Hi, Linda and welcome to WikiTree. The Clayton family was in the last two years extensively researched and documented by WikiTree member SJ Baty. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lanckford-1 is up to date as are the upstream Clayton (Claiton, Cleton) profiles. The Lanckford family upstream is unknown.
