Sir Leslie Morshead distinguished himself as a leader in both the First and Second World Wars: as an ANZAC at Gallipoli and on the Western Front during the former, and as general officer commanding 9th Division in North Africa during the latter. Morshead's men became known by Axis propagandists as the 'Rats of Tobruk' and 'Ali Baba Morshead and his 20,000 thieves'. After retiring from the military, he turned down an offer to be appointed governor of Queensland.
