Hello everyone: Composer of the romantic Era- Clara Wieck Schumann [[Wieck-14]] we are trying to get her featured in a Newsletter upcoming real soon so I only have until Sunday night to get this done. With your help I know we can! Right now she is only connected to the large tree via her famous husband Robert Schumann. But she was a large talent in her own right, so I am attempting to connect father Johann Gottlob "Friedrich" Wieck [[Wieck-49]] to the larger tree. I have searched the internet and searched all of Ancestry, Geni .... etc. The only thing said about Friedrich's father in biographies was he was "an unsuccessful merchant" presumably in Wittenberg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Deutschland where the son Friedrich was born. There are many Wieck already on Wikitree and in the right place of Wittenberg. And some clues lie in the family names. Please see [[Wicke-244]] and family, where we see the name Gottlieb/lob repeated within several of the family ancestors and descendants. And the name Adelheid (some Alt. spellings) , which was a given name of one Friedrich's and Marinane Tromliz's daughter's that died at a year or less, our Clara's sister. Adelheid is a name also in that family. The spellings are sometimes Wicek, Wicke also. I need some German experts to please jump in and help me connect the correct parents of Wieck-49, which are probably already in one of the Wieck profiles.  Or, if not at least maybe a uncle, grandparent, or cousin already is profiled where I can create only a few profiles to connect in.

This source (standard German reference work) states that Friedrich Wieck was the son of Carl Friedrich Gotthelf Wieck (1758-1804), a native of Dommitzsch (about 30 km SE of Wittenberg) who became a merchant in Pretzsch, and his wife Christiana Dorothea Oschatz (ca. 1760 - aft. 1813), a native of Kremdiswalde [bad digitization - should be Fremdiswalde] near Grimma (about 38 km S of Dommitzsch).

As for Wicke-244, not only does he have the wrong spelling (his name is spelled with a short i, while Friedrich Wieck's name is spelled with a long i - those are quite distinct sounds in German), but he is from Lagershausen in Hannover - 195 km from Dommitzsch. It would be very surprising if there were any connection whatsoever here.

Thank you for the help CH !  I was also wondering if Gottlieb and Gottlob as well as Adelheid were common names there?  And so I may be chasing a John Smith in German!  I will look up Carl father of our Friedrich and see if I can find some records and do at least a profile for each of his parents taking us back a bit further in time at least.   That was exactly why I needed a person versed in German names and places !!  Thanks again.

If anyone else has anything to contribute please go ahead ... I am still working on the connection for looks like Carl Friedrich Gotthelf and Christiana now....

This particular Wieck was a small-town merchant from Electoral Saxony, so he probably did not leave much of a trace besides in the church books. Neither Pretzsch nor Dommitzsch has its 18th-century church records online (either with the Mormons or with archion.de - though the latter is working on it). So the problem with doing genealogy on this family is that the sources still have to be accessed the old-fashioned way, by calling on the local parish office to have a look-see at the church books. Perhaps in five years (once archion.de has caught up) the situation might be different.

That is good to know... yes I am finding very little on him online. I will probably just mention what I have so far in his son's biography and leave it there for when some real records beyond family trees catch up. Since sadly looks like I cannot actually connect in that line to the larger treefrown  You certainly been helpful!
