Just for fun: Doctor Who free-space project

Are you a whovian? Would you like to help spruce up profiles of those who were part of Doctor Who?

Some of the existing profiles need a biography and some need the biography rewritten. Images need to be found that are not under copyright. And, of course, we need to connect them to the global tree!

Just answer or comment to join in!

WikiTree profile: Space:Doctor_Who
in Requests for Project Volunteers by Azure Robinson G2G6 Pilot (539k points)
Those Whovian images I posted are cropped from photographs I took of a tshirt and a hoodie that I own(ed), then digitally altered and manipulated.  Due to the degree of alteration and manipulation, I do believe the copyright for those images is mine,
Sorry - that was more intended towards the Free Space page, where there were questions regarding the images in the profiles. I didn't mean to imply it was related towards the image you've created.
I also made a post to the FS page regarding one image.
Thanks!!
I would love to do research at the archives on Gallifrey!  When does the next police box leave?
Tom Baker is my Doctor as well!

Hi Ken! Can you send me a private message and I'll add you to the free space page?

i may be related to paul grist the actor from glamorgan who was in doctor who stuff in 1970 and 1971. maybe , i am still sifting
Are my updates helpful at all, or should I just stop posting them?  Nobody responds, and I seem to be the only person doing updates.
I do find them useful. I've been working off and on on Doctor Who companion Katarina, trying to find a connection, but so far I've added family but no connection in sight.

I'd say keep on throwing information out there, Melanie. Although I will admit that I'm not able to keep pace with you all the time, being scattered between work, home projects, other Notables, and side projects like these.

I commenced watching in the era of John Pertwee. I love the Daleks. Who knew one could do so much with a whisk and a plunger?

How can one forget the BBC special effects department green bubble wrap, zippers that you could see. I loved it.
Hi Leandra! If you can send me a private message, I'll get you added to the  trusted list for the space page!
Will, would you like to join in? If you can send me a private message, I'll get you added to the trusted list for the space page!

I just saw your comment, I have really got too much to do already, having decided to try and trace all the descendants of one of my ancestors who was born in the early 1700's,  I think I am about halfway through that, I want to finish that, and I tend to make profiles of people  I admire, so just added https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wright-45037 and now i have got to get him connected. I have got no idea even if he can be connected. His fellow medic will be even harder to connect see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Moore-58388 and these profiles are still a work in progress

No problem, Will! Just drop me a message if you would like to join in, in the future!

Count me in, please!!

I first met the doctor during the Tom Baker era. Tom, Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison were my favourites of the 1970s and 80s. David Tennant is my favourite of the 1990s./2000s.

I did not much like Matt Smith and I did not like the older  scottish fellow with the Italian name. He was far too serious and Matt never quite had the humour right. His jokes usually fell flat IMO.

David Tennant OTOH was brilliant with the comedy and the timing!!

Oh and I did also like Chris (whose surname starts with E). He also had a great sense of wit, and comedy timing. I was sad that he only filmed one season.

I have not seen any episodes with the new Female doctor.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Eccleston was actually a pretty decent Doctor.  (Think the "Italian name" would be Peter Capaldi.)
Hi Robin! I added you to the trusted list on the space page!
Thanks Azure!!

Eccleston - snaps fingers. THAT was his name!!

Thanks Melanie.
Robynne, you and I found the Doctor around the same era. Tom Baker was "my" Doctor for many years, as PBS showed re-runs once many years ago, and I tried to absorb every single episode I could find of Tom's series. Unfortunately, when he regenerated, I just couldn't get into any other of the Doctors, and years later I heard it had been cancelled.

Then the Doctor Who movie came out, followed by Eccleston and all the new Doctors. I've enjoyed all of them up to the newest one. Capaldi took a bit of getting used to, but eventually he found his stride. Whittaker was given a new approach, was Earth-bound at lot for her first season, and just didn't really feel like the Doctor at all. Of course, Capaldi had much the same issues his first year, so I've tried not to be too hard on her. Oh well - such is life. The only constant is change...
I warmed to Capaldi during his second season, and the second season with Ms. Whittaker was better than her first, so I have also warmed to her! My favorite is Tennant, though.
Tennant is my favorite as well, Natalie! Added you to the trusted list on the space page!

Here's the Brigadier:

I can't find a profile for Deborah Watling (Victoria Waterfield)

I can't find a profile for Michael Craze (Ben Jackson)

I can't find a profile for Ian Marter (Harry Sullivan)

Here's the profile for one incarnation of The Master:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ainley-191

I can't find a profile for Mary Tamm (Romana)

I can't find a profile for Caroline John (Dr. Liz Shaw)

Well, a couple of them already there, but several that could be started.
I think being a Dalek is the Dr Who Universe - is the same as being a "Red Shirt" in the Star Trek Universe!!
Awesome, Scott! Thanks!

Yep! added it to the space page for reference. Thanks!
Lots of living persons there, unfortunately for us (but fortunate that they are still living).

I remember first watching Doctor Who as a kid in the 1970's on a 14" B&W Tube Television. The channel was a bit snowy, but I enjoyed it the same.

My favorite Doctor Who (to this day) is Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor) whose still the longest lasting/running doctor.

Fun Fact 1: S01-E01 of Doctor Who was originally filmed in September 1963 (of course in black and white videotape) was re-recorded in October 1963 due to several technical and performance errors (along with several creative changes to the costumes and others as they filmed the second recording). It was the second recording that debuted on 23 November 1963.

I'm happy to try some Whovian connecting! My first doctor was Patrick Troughton but my favourites of the early era were Pertwee  and Baker. Of the modern era Eccleston and Tennant are stand outs! And for the record, Cybermen still freak me out 50 years later!

Cybermen are the worst, and I still look at angel statuary warily.

Hi Elizabeth! Thanks for responding, love to have you join in! Can you send me a private message and I'll add you to the free space page?

Me too, Natalie!! shivers

It's the looking away you should be wary of.

True that, Melanie.

Random thought. We need to create profiles for the show's creators, right? They were Verity Lambert and Sydney Newman:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Newman

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verity_Lambert

And let's not forget one of the Doctor's first companions!

Found Barbara. =D

Looking at William Hartnell - his father is a mystery. His mother's line isn't well-researched. So I'm making some progress with his wife's line. We'll see what comes of it. I have about 20 profiles to add in the McIntyre side, several of which kind of vanish in the Scotland side. But it is opening up several additional avenues of research. Hopefully one will lead to a connection.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
I doubt I can find more about his daughter, but I'll do a bit of checking as well.

For the photo, you had mentioned way up near the top about a possibility of creating or having a photo created for Bill Hartnell. So that was my "thumbs up" for at least my opinion of doing what we could to get him an authorized profile image.
Sorry! I've been caught up in some other projects. Please do keep posting as you like, it's nice to see what's happening. :) Thanks for all you are doing. The images for the different adversaries is another great idea!

.

Ahh, ok -- because I also mention on the space page that :

I've gone through some of my pre-move souvenirs and found an old magazine page with Hartnell's photo as the Doctor. I've scanned it, cropped it, "manipulated" it (because it's an edge of the page thing, with part of his head missing). I'm not sure where copyright lies with something bought and paid for that was originally published in the 1980s.

I think it would likely fall under Fair Use, especially with the manipulating to cover up the missing portion of his head, but understand if others think otherwise.

.

. .  . and that also got no responses.  (Feedback can assist collaboration!  cheeky

Well, 1980's is awkward, as it's past that fair use copyright period, but cropped, manipulated, and otherwise should be sufficient to create a new work that would not be connected in a reasonable manner to the original. At least in my opinion.

I really think a site like ours that attempts to simply document information and has no intention of profiting from the information on the site is really, really, really low on the totem pole for any suit concerns, and it's much more likely to receive a cease and desist order or even a pre-order warning than anything else. Not that we should go our of our way to intentionally draw such attention, but I think if we do our best to live by the spirit of the law, then I've never seen a situation occur where some lawyer went out of their way to try to stick it to a site that made an honest mistake while trying to do the right thing.
And I'm drawing a blank on his daughter's passing as well.

But presuming she may have lived as long as her parents, or maybe a small bit more - her father died at age 67 and her mother at age 77, so presuming she probably didn't live past 87, that would put her date of death around 2016 or before. If she was alive today, she would be 91, which is conceivable, but a bit unlikely.

I'll keep hunting around a bit more - after dinner...

It looks like the National Archives has not received any notification of the daughter Heather's death. If they had then her entry in the 1939 Register would be unredacted, but there is one redacted entry in the household of William Hartnell and his wife Heather (see free-to-view image at https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/21652881?h=e6a783) which I assume is their daughter.

That doesn't guarantee that she is still alive, for example she may have died overseas, but personally I consider that somebody who is redacted in the 1939 Register (which is done to protect the privacy of potentially living people) should probably be unlisted on WikiTree (for precisely the same reason).

Ok, I'll unlist her.  If  anyone wants on the TL for any reason, just let me know.
Sounds good - if the government is acknowledging they believe she's still alive, then we should go with them for now barring any positive proof (which hasn't been found at all).

If she was alive today, she would be 91, which is conceivable, but a bit unlikely.

.

I don't see it as unlikely at all, which is why I started querying it.

My gran, who  died in 1988, lived to 93 years of age. Why wouldn't someone born much later, with better health benefits and such, live longer?

My aunt-in-law is still living, active, and healthy, at 93 and going strong.

My cousin was born 1900 and died 2005.  That made her 105 years 2 days old.  She lived in 3 centuries (and should qualify as notable just for that! cheeky).

I was able to get a copy of Hartnell's biography (it's waiting for me to pick up at the library), so I'll see if there are any interesting gems in there.

The Hill's will be challenging.

Grace Jacqueline Hill has very little information to go on. Raised by her grandparents. Born 1929, so very little in the way of key source information to use. I did what digging I could and came up empty for now. Her husband is still living, so I didn't really push too hard in that area either. I'll have to come back to her some day.

Adrienne Hill is also young, born 1937, so we'll probably run into a limited amount of source material to go on. I've got to do some additional digging here, but I'm not hopeful that we'll find a lot on her either.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
As mentioned above, I've found some family for Katarina (Adrienne Hill) and am researching a connection. I'm glad I was able to find some of her ancestors, but still have much work ahead if I'm going to find a connection.

Just found this was thinking about creating a space but it's already here :D

I started watching in the Jon Pertwee era and still watch it to this day, remember hiding behind the sofa haha

fun fact 1.  that blew my mind (can't get my head around it all to be fair)

Georgina Moffet (Moffat) is the daughter of Peter Davison (Dr #5) and Sandra Dickison (so really is the Doctors Daughter!!) she is also the real life wife of David Tennant (the best DR ever!!, Dr #10)  she appeared, as Jenny,  in the episode The Doctor's Daughter (S4 episode 6) as Dr (David Tennant's) Daughter

can I join?
