Who is the father of Roger Clapp?

+5 votes

WikiTree currently shows that Roger Clapp (1609-1691) was the son of William Clapp.  Does anybody have a source for this?  The Record of the Clapp Family in America shows his father as unknown, but assumes that he had an uncle Richard: see https://archive.org/stream/clappmemorialrec00clap#page/n23/mode/2up

Anderson's The Great Migration Begins, vol. 1, pp. 366, gives a birthdate and birthplace but does not identify Roger's father.

Wow, that profile is a mess and I can't help but see some questionable and confusing text. I'll take a look at both Anderson and familysearch.

I just detached the bogus Magna Carta ancestry of Roger Clap -- the weak link was the parents of his mother's father Robert Channon.   I started another G2G thread here: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/137186/what-evidence-is-there-for-robert-channon-s-parents-

BIRTH: Salcombe Regis, Devonshire, 2 April 1609 (deposed "aged sixty-two or thereabouts" 31 October 1671 [SCC 8]).

England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

Person Details for Roger Clapp says he was baptized 9 April 1609 in Salcombe, son of William. No mother named.

Between these two pieces of information, it seems safe to say the parish record refers to the same Roger Clapp of Massachusetts, and that his father was William. I don't know where the mother's name comes from, though.

I've also cleaned up the profile.
