Why is displaying a profile EXTREMELY slow?

WikiTree has been EXTREMELY slow in a peculiar way for several days.  I have not experienced any problem with any other website. If I attempt to display a profile, the first part of the profile appears immediately.  Below it appears a large gray area. Gradually (VERY gradually) chunks of the profile appear in the gray area, and finally I see the whole profile.  Two days ago it took 10 minutes to display a whole profile.

In addition to what Laura has said, it may be a browser issue.  What browser, or browsers, do you use?
Are you using a VPN?
Google Chrome, latest version
I don't use VPN.
During this period of slowness I have observed that at times the problem is not present. Then it returns. At this precise moment WikiTree works completely normally.
I have seen the same problem using Chrome, no VPN, over the past few days.  I had the same 'large' grey area, then a large blank area, and another grey area below it.  If I refreshed the browser, it would usually clear. I have seen it on Space pages, as well as profile pages. I haven't had the problem today, but it wasn't consistent when I saw it also.

They are updating and working on some improvements to the WikiTree system.

The update took place this morning, and wouldn't have caused the extreme slowness that Neal has been experiencing for days.
I saw the post about it not long ago. WikiTree has been working slow for me all day too. I don't usually have that problem.

I experimented a bit and found that I did not have the problem in Firefox or in Google Chrome on another device.  That led me to believe that the problem was with the copy of Chrome on my main computer.  I uninstalled it and downloaded another copy.  I took the risk of NOT removing bookmarks and other settings and then replacing them.  I have used WikiTree quite a bit since replacing Chrome.  It seems to behave normally.

After downloading another copy of Chrome I had no problems for about 2 weeks.  Then the problem returned.  I then tried a less extreme remedy.  I cleared 'cookies & other site data' and 'cached images & files'.  The problem went away.
