Shared Photo: 1850's working women in Germany

When I paid for my German research the professional genealogist was also an author, and wrote a story about German life.  Maren Dieke gave me permission to use this story and the pictures attached.
What was life like back then?
This helps explain a few things, especially for the Mining community in the Harz mountains of Lower Saxony.

I wanted to share this family photo of Clausthal und St. Andreasberg im Oberharz By Maren Dieke with the community. Location: unknown. Date: unknown.

Times were hard for the poor Harz population during that time.

I have read a lot about the area in recent months, especially about the working and living conditions in the mining villages of the Harz Mountains, since a branch of my mother's ancestors came from the Eastern Harz Mountains.

Many families had 10 or more children, hardly any of whom reached adulthood. Men hardly ever reached the age of 45 - 50 years due to the hard working conditions. Due to the many births and the catastrophic hygiene conditions, many women died in childbed.

I liked the part of the story that mention both the welfare system many miners contributed to and the employer helped fund, and also how they mentioned all the miners and families stuck together to help each other out in hard times.
Even today, if neighbors have each other's backs, we'll deal with what's in front.
