Charles Dalrymple was born in Pennsylvania in the 1840s and grew up in or near Chatauqua NY. Around 1860-61 he enlisted in the New York 9th Cavalry and fought in many Civil War battles. After the war, he homesteaded in eastern Michigan (near Watertown) and married Mahalia (aka Mahala) Bowman, who like many of the farmers in eastern Michigan at that time came from Ontario, British Canada.
I am related to Chas. Dalrymple through his daughter, Mary Dalrymple Cornfoot. Does anyone else have information about this Charles Dalrymple?
Using online sources like genealogy.com, I have traced Charles's family origins back to Massachusetts in the late 1600s. These early-American Dalrymple settlers seem to have come from the town/area of Dalrymple in the west Lowlands of Scotland (Ayreshire) by way of Belfast, Ireland, where they spent less than one full generation. Other Dalrymple-searches online have linked our early-American Dalrymple settlers to James Dalrymple, the Viscount of Stair, of the early 1600s in Edinburgh, Midlothia, Scotland. I find this link tenuous and would like to understand it better. Thanks!
