Why am I seeing advertising on my Wikitree?

+3 votes
I went to work on my tree and am finding advertising (e.g., signing up for Ancestry, etc.) on open spaces on various of my ancestors. Why am I getting this advertising on these pages? It is very disconcerting! As disconcerting as some of the 'background' selected for PGM and MCB profiles. For those of us with neuro-visual issues, this is not helpful to doing wikiwork.

Is there a policy now where Wikitree, a free tree, now has to accept advertising for whatever reason? Most if not all of us are adding to the tree at no cost or our own cost when we pay for Ancestry, FMP, or make donations to groups such as the Cornwall Church Offices.

Carol - you only see those ads when you are not logged in.  That's one of the ways WikiTree can stay free.

"We have made a pledge to keep WikiTree free. This is possible because we are an ultra low-cost operation. Almost everything is done by volunteers. By keeping costs low we are able to cover expenses through modest ads on public pages."

You shouldn't be seeing any advertising if you're logged in (one of the benefits of joining WikiTree!).

If by MCB you mean "Magna Carta Baron" - the profiles for all 25 Magna Carta surety barons are managed by the Magna Carta Project, which addresses background images. If the background image on a profile managed by the Magna Carta Project is a problem for you, just post a comment to the profile asking that it be removed.

See number 18 for the project's checklist (well, #18 as of 28 September 2020): https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Magna_Carta_Project_Checklist

That entry also references a G2G discussion about Magna Carta Project policy on backgrounds used:

Hi Liz,

I'll clarify. I am not seeing 'ads' on MCB or PGM. I used these as examples of some of the background that is very distressing to those of us who have neuro-visual issues. I was equating some of these background COAs and other visuals that have been discussed on G2G in the past.

Liz, I did not intend to suggest that there was advertising on either of these. I only intended to use some of the background choices that can be as visually frustrating as the advertising.

Ros, in her post above made clear that I needed to be 'logged in'. And, Liz, you are correct, it is a benefit of joining Wikitree because I have since 'rebooted' and 'logged in' and the advertising is gone.

Thank you both for your speedy responses!
