Can I search for people by birth location alone?

+2 votes
I'm trying to find possible connections with my family on WT. I thought that instead of searching for each of my ancestors individually, I'd search by their birth location. All were born in a small region of Bavaria, Germany called Lower Franconia.

I haven't figured out how to do it.

Any suggestions?

There are 84 profiles with a birth place of Lower Franconia. The way to find them is under the "Find" menu at the top of the screen click "Search". Enter the Last Name as * and the Birth Location as Lower Franconia.

Edited to add: Using the same method with a Birth Location of Unterfranken gives another 926 profiles.

One way to do this is to look at profiles that have been assigned to a geographical category.

Lower Franconia, which is known as "Unterfranken" in German, has the category Unterfranken, Bayern, which has six profiles grouped in it. In addition, a number of individual Kreise (counties) have their own subcategory in this category with individual profiles grouped in them.

However, don't hold out high hopes - there are not that many German profiles on Wikitree, and many of them that do exist do not have a geographical category attached to them.

Thanks for the reply.  I did that search and found only the records I entered. Oh well...
My experience is that there are relatively few actual German genealogists on Wikitree, so most of the German records here are those for German ancestors of American, South African, or Australian/New Zealand immigrants - and those entering that information are often not very conversant with German geography. It also means that, unless your ancestors had other descendants who also emigrated, they are not likely already to be on Wikitree.

Using wikitree+, I found 112 when I searched for 'Lower Franconia'.  There are profiles that have 'Franconia' in them without Lower, but easy enough to look through to ignore those.

Changing the search to Lower Franconia, Bavaria, it went down to 85 profiles, so that might be what you want.  Without comparing the 2 results, I don't know if it did bypass the profiles that had something else in them..
