I can add a to the profile of John (Simson). (recently adopted as direct ancestor) This is who I can add:

  • Patrick Simson (October 1628 - 1715), and possibly his parents (research ongoing for original source documentation)
  • Adam Simson (1594–1642), and his wife,
  • Margaret Spens.

These are the sources I am using:

  • Records of the Carrick Moore Family" by George Heath, 1912. (extracted and cited at https://www.jjhc.info/simsonpatrick1715 accessed 29 Sep 2020.) Original text being sought via Google Books and National Archives currently.
  • Wright, D.F. "Patrick Simson" in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. (https://www.oxforddnb.com/view/10.1093/ref:odnb/9780198614128.001.0001/odnb-9780198614128-e-67858?rskey=TBDpBP&result=2 accessed 29 Sep 2020 life link https://doi.org/10.1093/ref:odnb/67858 )

Should I contact one of the pre-1700 projects or know about any style guidelines before proceeding? Thank you!

That profile is not managed by a project. So, you do not need to contact one. The first source you mention is only available for purchase or at a library. You can look at Worldcat to see if a branch near you has a copy.

The source from the ODNB is a good one. I just looked at it and it has some good information in it. Check FamilySearch, I just looked and there are several records for him. There also a few men named that but, in a few his wife and a children are listed.

As long as you follow the styles, standards and sourcing expected for a pre-1700 you can go ahead and work on it. Here is the page with links that should answer your questions concerning Pre-1700 Profiles. Have fun!

Thank you Laura. I have reread the style rules and am comfortable/ regular user of Family Search (transcribed and original images), and other primary source agencies such as ScotlandsPeople and the GRO, as a big believer in reliable source data. I will continue my research in the other books mentioned and reach out for help if I require further assistance. As a notable although less well known family I wanted to ensure that there wasn’t a project currently but would be happy if others wanted to contribute information to the research too. Again, thank you for taking the time to answer and your guidance.
