How to import from Ancestry.com to WikiTree

I exported all my WikiTree individuals to Ancestry.com via a GEDCOM, in order to obtain the maximum additions and corrections to my data. It was a fruitful excercise.

I now want to return the improved data to WikiTree - but I just cannot make sense out of the GEDMatches process! I am quite prepared to spend time going through my long list of entries, but how do I prevent the numerous individual entries containing minor improvements from being skipped?

  • Should I click to the left of the yellow M and then remove the tick in the Skip field (which automatically appears)?
  • I suppose that this will result in many duplicated individuals which I will have to merge one by one. Is there a simpler way?

I have not received any response to my question - maybe I did not formulate my question well. I am quite anxious to proceed with updating my data on WikiTree.

Any advice?

Hi Fanie

You might want to send a message to Eowyn Langholf, our resident Gedcom expert.

Here's her link:

Perhaps you haven't received an answer because no one wants to disappoint you.

There is currently no way to do what you want to do beyond what you describe AND creating intentional duplicates is frowned upon and might get you into trouble.

The amount of time it takes to do what you want to do would be about the same amount of time it would take to update existing profiles manually.

Wikitree is simply not set up for the kind of "auto-updating" you're hoping for.

Sorry.
