Schleswig-Holstein in 1862

I have a gentleman whose death record says he was born in "Fiensburg, Germany" in 1862. According to Wikipedia, Fiensburg was then in Schleswig-Holstein, and another Wikipedia article indicates that in 1862, Schleswig-Holstein was part of Denmark. The FamilySearch-fed drop-down location list suggests "Slesvig, Denmark," for a location until 1866, and that it what I have used, but I'd appreciate some input from someone with more knowledge of the historical geography of the area. Mange tak for din hjælp.

It looks like my question was answered in 2012. Any further comments?

Flensburg at that time was in the Herzogtum Schleswig/Hertugdømmet Slesvig. It was ruled by the Danish king but was not an integral part or province of Denmark (not that uncommon, Hannover was ruled by the king of Great Britain but not part of it, Holstein was ruled by the Danish king but a member of the Deutscher Bund). In fact, part of the reasons for the 1848 and 1864 German-Danish wars was the attempt of the Danish side to extend the Danish constitution to include Schleswig/Slesvik and of the German side to make it a part of the Norddeutscher Bund. The 1855 constitution (Helstatsforfatningen) treated Denmark, Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg as equal "sub-states" with Schleswig being a lien of the Danish crown and Holstein and Lauenburg being members of the Deutscher Bund.

Thank you for that detailed answer. I would have selected it as best answer had Susan not already done so.

It had been taken over by Denmar, but soon with conflicts over the Danish throne, there would be uprisings in the province, which woud be bounced back and forth between Denmark and Prussia/Germany
