Seeking info on surname "LaVie"

Looking for information about the early years and parents of my great grandfather, Henry Nicholas Thompson aka LaVie. According to US Census records he was born in 1854 in New York state and his parents were from Spain. Family tradition holds that he assumed the name Thompson following a dispute with either a brother or a step father. Thompson is either the name of a benefactor or possibly his step fathers or mothers maiden name. A search of the 1860 and 1870 Census was fruitless nor have I been any able to find and matching immigration records for LaVie, which isn't a very common name. I have not been able to find out anything about him before 1880 where he appears in the census in SW Virginia, married with a 1 yr old daughter. He was married three times, the last two in Marion, Smyth Co., Virginia in 1887 and 1900. These marriage licenses should have his parents names recorded but these years aren't available on line that I can find. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dan

This is totally off the wall but you may not know that Lavie is a first name with hebrew origins.

Are you thinking of Levi?
Thank you for taking the time to read the question and commenting.  I am certain that it's not Levi,  Henry's oldest son by his third wife was named Harry LaVie Thompson.  There was a George LaVie born in 1856 who was the largest exporter of hops in the coumtry and I've documented him through passport applications and newspaper articles about hops production in Oregon .  There may be a connection but I haven't been able to show it yet.
Hi Dan

Are you aware of Lavie Thompson at

Are you related since Lavie Thompson born in Franklin County, Virginia?

Have you considered possible reasons for change in name from LaVie to Thompson? I normally associate something like this with a desire to cover up a previous life history. He has probably done a good job. It could be a tough one.

Hi Marnen I was thinking of Lavie Thompson which just puts the V into lower case. Google Lavie and you will find a few more. Regards John

I am a Lavie and I'm always looking for information on my last name.  I know my grandfather was Pierre Lavie and was born in France in the 1800's, but I don't know much more.  He went to Cuba and lived there till his death.  I would love any info from anyone.  I'm also curious...are all with this last name related in some way??  It's a very old last name
