General Thomas Sumter has been mixed up with the Sumpter family of Cambridgeshire, England [closed]

The profile for General Thomas Sumter-18 is awaiting a merge with a recently created duplicate profile Sumter-78

Sumter-18 is PPP but has no project looking after him. He should be under Project Management due to the issues with his attached parentage.

He has been given parents of a William Sumpter  (sometimes with middle name Thomas) and an Elizabeth Iveson. Both are of Histon in Cambridgeshire, England. There are multiple duplicates of these awaiting merging away.

As David Cooper and Roger Lloyd have elegantly shown in their construction of the family of William Sumpter of Histon (always with a P!), these were a family who stayed in Histon. Elizabeth was the Widow Iveson when she married William in Histon in 1729, and she was actually Elizabeth Archer. There is a paper trail of land deeds which place the Sumpters in Histon for the time that they are said to be in Virginia.

My proposal is:

1. all the William Sumters are merged into one. All the William Sumpters are merged together. The eventual William Sumpter is detached from General Thomas Sumter.

2. The profile of General Thomas Sumter is adopted by an appropriate project and keeps the PPP

The Sumter line requires further research. Was there really a wife in Virginia called Elizabeth Iveson? Or is this just confusion with the Widow Iveson in Histon?

3. The profile of William Sumpter is adopted by the England Project, and PPP applied to prevent him being attached back to the Sumter family in Virginia.

Thank you, Jo for catching this. I agree with you, and General Thomas Sumter is now under the protection of a Project.

One of the problems is a lot of people today misspell Sumter and spell it Sumpter.

Laura, he already had legacy PPP, but is not under the management of a Project yet. The 1776 Project has been approached.
Jo, the 1776 Project template was added about 2 hrs after you originally posted this. That was why I said it was now under a Project. They do not appear to have been added as a manager yet though.
The General now has two projects looking after him, which is fab, and the English William Sumpter has been adopted by the England Project. I think we can close this question now. Thanks All!
Thank you, for bringing this to my attention. It is great now they will both be protected from incorrect merging
