Sub categories of UK Census 1881

Question

Under Categories/Census/UK Census there are sub Categories for 1851 United Kingdom Census, 1861 and 1901. Is it possible to add sub categories for 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1911. I could then add/link these to profiles as I update them.

It would be even better and technically more correct, if theses were called 1881 "England and Wales Census" as they are not United Kingdom, Scotland and NI were not included.

Why would you want to categorise any England or Wales census?

That said I cannot even find an 1851 UK Census, category. Please show the link.

hope the link works, this shows 4 sub categories 1851, 1861 1901 and Wales

I was looking through a tutorial a couple of days ago and it suggested that it was good practice when using census to add links to the sub categories. I'm just trying to make sure I'm getting into good habits.

I encourage you to get into good habits, but suggest caution with developing this category & its introduction. There where nine England & Wales Census, 1841-1911 & 1939.  Millions of possible entries, which frankly I don't see what purpose they will serve.

The categorization project will be best to offer a view.

I would just add the place & County the person was born.

There have been more than nine censuses, but the 9 mentioned are the ones with identifying data for all family members to which we currently have access. 1921 will be available in 2022, 1931 was destroyed during the war and there was not one taken in 1941. 1841 was the earliest one with names of family members. 1831 was a statistical analysis of BMDs from info provided by parish clergy and can be found on Ancestry. I have occasionally come across information collated and recorded by parish priests that went above and beyond what was asked of them by government, one of which from 1811 contained names and ages of parishioners. The census is ongoing every 10 years so we will see 1951 in 2052.

Under the United Kingdom Census records I am asking for 3 new sub categories to be added to the already existing sub categories, I'm not asking to Change the Welsh Categories

Nat I would appreciate your views but I’d be inclined to agree with Anon Woody on the usefulness of this category structure?

If we keep it then obviously England and Wales would need to be aligned, however it’s not a category structure we encourage the use of in England or Wales.

H, I would be interested if you could share the link for the tutorial too please?

In the England Project we have an induction for new Project Members called the Orphan Trail, The inclusion of these categories isn’t even mentioned when we help new members learn to use categories.

Welcome to Wikitree, it’s great to see you trying to get it right first time! Unfortunately I don’t believe the tutorial you have viewed is necessarily correct!

Nat, who answered above is a Leader in Categorisation and I’m a Leader in England so we will work to understand what to do with these categories going forward. Thanks for bringing it to our attention :-)
