Challenge of the week: Clean up names [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our Data Doctors Challenge this week?

Aleš's "WikiTree+" data analysis has uncovered thousands of profiles with special characters or words in name fields that probably don't belong there. There are parentheses that need to be removed, suffixes that need to be moved to the Suffix field, and much more.

Errors in name fields aren't just cosmetic. They make it less likely for profiles to be found in searches and matching.

Here is the table of likely problems and other suggestions to investigate.

Although the changes might be simple and fast, a thoughtful genealogist like you needs to investigate and carefully make the decision.

After you investigate something, set the status [more info]. That will let others know it has been addressed ... and ... it will earn you a point. The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get a badge and the bragging rights.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on, and it will help us avoid stepping on each others' toes. Also post here if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

P.S. If you want to chat or coordinate what you are working on with others, in addition to this G2G post there is a handy spreadsheet courtesy of Steven Tibbetts.

I have come across a large problem of Polish individuals (more than 40) all created in 2015. I know nothing about naming practices, but some of them look as if the manager (not active) has added his name into the current name. Do you have an expert in Polish naming that can look at

If a profile name is using a U topped by a doube dots, should it be changed to a simple U so that it can be found be the wikitree search engine ?
by N Gauthier G2G6 Pilot (313k points)
If a person has a 'ü' in the name, then that's the correct way not write it, not 'u'.

The WikiTree search engine find letters with diacritics when you enter them without diacritics.

I have a merge to initiate where one profile has just "u" and the other profile has the special "ü" so which way should the final merged profile have ?

If you want to do it yourself, these are the profile numbers ...

Von Jülich-Kleve-Berg-2
and
Duke of Julich - Cleves - Berg, La Marck-1

Thanks
Duke of Julich - Cleves - Berg, La Marck is an English translation for a German name, so it's incorrect. Von Jülich-Kleve-Berg is the actual a German name.
