How do you handle a claim that a published British History is wrong?

The biography of John Lay (Lay-408) contains information sourced from "British History Online" and "A History of the County of Essex...."

I have now received an email advising me that the History books are in error, having attributed their historical references to the wrong John Lay.

As I have no way of determining who is right, I have noted in the biography section, the facts in dipute, together with the full text of the email in the Footnotes.

I intend to notify the sender (of the email) of the steps I have taken.

Can I or should I do anything more than this?

If the John Lay who died in 1819 indeed had children it would be highly unusual to leave everything to a nephew and nothing to the children. I would try to get as much documentation for the family of John Lay including following up on the offer of the full text of the testament.

Thank you Helmut

You make a good point. That John Lay did have two children, so I will follow up on the Last Will and Testament.

For now you did enough by putting information in the biography that the sources are in dispute, I would have used bold letters but yours works OK.  Once you have better sources and can resolve the dispute then it would be time to change the biography but I would not remove anything until this is resolved.
