John Moir asking for assistance to find my GGGrandFather's parents details.

James More first appears getting married to Janet Davidson, of Oyne, at Chapel of Garioch on 27/12/1817. They were farming on Rescivet (now known as Resthivet) where they had 4 children. James then decides to alter his surname to Moir and they have more children as well as moving to Manage a larger farm next door called leggats Den (now known as Legatesden. James dies at Alvah in Banfshire while farming a property called Little Blackton (about 6 mies south of Banff).

The problem is that neither the death certificate nor the tomb stone nor the Marriage Certificate mentions any detail about his parents. I have all the data needed as of 1817 but having consulted Churches and other authorities there appears to be no evidence of his existence. Using the data from the census James is officially called 86 at death (died 16/8/1865 at Alvah) but there is no certainty that this age is correct. If correct he was 38 when married and if the error was made in typing the death year on the stone should have been 80 the he would have been 32 when married and this data ties in more with the census data.

Has any one any clues as to how to access birth data other than with the IGI and other similar records. I can not find any acceptable data to date.

One possibility is that the name should have been MOIR from the start and that his father may well have been Andrew but this fails the test of family name groups.

Finally the Census data states he was born in Inverurie (or that district) and that is possible as he worked in the area on the above farms.

I have Moirs as ancestors, and the ADAM name from Monymusk, which is in the Chapel of Garioch area of Aberdeenshire.

Here are two sources for the Moir Genealogy, published in Boston in 1913, which might be helpful:

https://archive.org/details/moirgenealogycol00moir

https://www.ancestry.ca/search/collections/20590/

The second has a table of contents.

I also have an Isabella Moir from Thornhill, and other Moirs that married into the Adam line. You can check out my tree at Adam-1498.

I also have an Elizabeth Moir from Keig, Aberdeenshire, born 1765, who married my ancestor Perter Adam (1757-1820), married 1785 in Monymusk, from the Bain Family Tree on Ancestry, used with contact and permission. It was grgrfather George who married one the Doune and Thornhill Moirs, Isabella, in 1879.

Hope this helps.
