What does it mean when the relationship finder lists someone as uncertain?

Mostly it simply means the parent-child relationship radio button was not clicked for anything.  There are four options :

  • is non-biological
  • is uncertain
  • is confident
  • is confirmed with DNA

You can see that I have clicked confident for Bernard William's relationship with his parents,  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacGroarty-2

If someone is linking adoptive parents (usually because the bio parents are not known) they would click the non-biological button.

The Help pages describe when to use these, basically of you have a source that is primary and supports the relationship you should select confident, otherwise if only a family tree or something it would be uncertain . Confirmed would be due to DNA testing only (because documents can be incorrect due to error or intentionally wrong to hide relationships)

It will also show up  when a profile manager or other person forgot to check non-biological or confident or confirmed with DNA.
