Joe Maxwell was a 163cm (5ft 4 1/2in), 57kgs (126lbs) teenager who became an ANZAC and Australia's second most-decorated soldier of the First World War. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, Military Cross, Bar to the Military Cross, and Distinguished Conduct Medal in four separate instances of extreme gallantry. After the war he struggled to regain 'normality' and suffered poor health. He was jailed for non-payment of maintenance arrears for his daughter (how that helped payment I'm blowed if I know) after the government slashed veterans' pensions to 25%. He stood character witness for one of his former soldiers who was accused of housebreaking. He circumvented the bureaucracy and enlisted in the militia during the Second World War. He used the VC forum to speak on behalf of veteran welfare. An ANZAC true.
