My grandfather was born before 1850 (1842). I presume not unheard of but how rare is it.

My late half-aunt's paternal grandfather was born 100 years before she was (1834 vs. 1934).
Both my grandfathers were in the 1890's so not even in your ball-park

That's amazing -- did you know your grandfather at all? My grandfathers were born in 1879 and 1881. One of my husband's grandfathers was born in 1864.
