confused about surname

Question

I have a question about a surname . On the marriage certificate of Edward Alderdice 1887-1946 Williamina Plumtree/Christie 1875/1942 it has William Plumtrees surname as Carter I always thought that it was his wife's Janes Surname now not so sure can anyone help please

this does not help it was the Plumtree family marrying Jane Carter  and they put Carter instead of Plumtree

this does not help sorry Cater is for William Plumtrees wife but used on marriage certificate as Williamins fathers name wrongly
