Howdy Connectors! (sorry it's late)

Good news! The Connectors Challenge now begins on the FIRST of the month in line with other challenges at WikiTree! This challenge is open to everyone. Unlike the Connect-a-Thon, only actual connections made are counted, not the number of profiles created to get to a connection.

The Connector’s Challenge Rules:

 1. Pick an existing profile (created before this month’s challenge began) that is not currently connected to the Global Family Tree. (Hint: If you are a member of the Connectors Project, you’ll see a yellow puzzle piece icon next to that person’s name at the top of their profile if they aren’t connected.)

2. Add a profile for any first degree relative for that profile (a parent, spouse, child, or sibling). Continue adding first degree relatives until you run into a profile that is already connected to the Global Family Tree that you can attach to. Remember to use good sources to support the creation and connection of every profile you make! Please be aware that it takes 24 hours for the tree to update and show the connection.

3. ANSWER this post. This lets us know that you’re participating in this month’s challenge. It’s easiest for us to track your trail if you post it here, but you can also use the Challenge Tracker. Just be sure you comment “Connected to Smith-000” when you make the connection to the already existing, already connected profile. Replace Smith-000 with the actual profile ID of the starting profile you were trying to connect.

4. Remember the tally is not of profiles created (like the recently completed Connect-a-Thon) but of actual connections made to the Global Family Tree. You might connect a whole branch of profiles and make 100 new profiles in the process of making a connection, but the connection only counts as 1.

5. If you enjoy challenges, keep in mind that adding good sources to any existing profiles you run into while connecting or fixing errors on those existing profiles might count towards the Sourcerers or Data Doctors Challenges.

6. Coming Soon (we are still working out the kinks) - Let us know if you’d like a Connector’s Badge for participating. That will also make you a part of our project and we’d love to have you! The person who makes the most connections each month will get a Top Connector template for their profile. Stats are kept and updated on the Connectors Challenge page. The link to the tracker will follow.

Let me know if you have any questions :)

Might be too late to join, no?
You're welcome to join for this month, but it is fairly close to the end of this month's challenge. :) If you would like to join this month, feel free to post an answer on this thread asking to join. Otherwise, definitely join us for December's challenge! :)
OK I'll join for this month just because I connected myself, my parents, and the one grandparent I'd entered last week. I just want to get the puzzle pieces right now, really!

I am participating in the November's Connectors Challenge.

PLEASE send a message to the CURRENT leader with 12 claims, as they are making connection claims for profiles created in November... which is not allowed. This will help prevent adding more claims to a false leader. Thanks

This is fixed now. :) The tracker will now only show those who are participating.  Let me know what you think!
Oh wow, that is great! Thank you so much for your work on this :)

I'd like to join it. I tried doing so another month (Aug or September?) but couldn't figure out tracker, like when to use it when I was making new profile that connected to old one, or what. But I added "connected to X" comments.
by Mariah Sheehy G2G5 (5.1k points)
You can of course create new profiles ... but they do NOT count for this challenge which is only for connecting OLD profiles that were created before November 1st. Thanks for your co-operation with the challenge rules :)
I know only connections to old profiles count, but what I meant was I wasn't sure which how to use the tracker- is it when I add a new profile (connected eventually to another old profile) as a child or spouse to an old profile? Because I usually find the old profiles when adding relationships to the new ones. I'll try searching & adding them the other direction, new onto old. Not sure if I'm explaining that properly!
Hi Mariah :) Thank you for joining us this month!

When you start with an old profile that isn't connected to the tree and manage to connect it to the main Wikitree tree, you can go into the profile and either make a formatting change or add a source to support the connection (if one isn't present already). That will bring up the "Changes saved" message where you can click to open the tracker options.

Alternatively, you can make a numbered list right here on your post in lieu of using the tracker. Connections take a decent amount of time, so the numbers are more manageable.

Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

I'm in! I love it when I find a connection -- did it with one of the date night people earlier today - such a buzz.

Update: another one done - the 75 profiles attached to a stettaford orphan that had no dates ... now connected!

and a gilfoyle! saw the mother's maiden name and thought... I've seen that pairing before, Took a bit of hunting to find the census spelling of gilfoile to show the family together.

and now waiting on a merger to make another connection! that's 4.

a very tortuous path to connect a Boyd to the tree via Jeffers-1451 ! tick = 5 done

had a near connection, but couldn't find a source , so a miss on that one, but got an unconnected Pinder into the tree, so = 6

another gilfoyle into the tree = 7!

a Boyd via a painfull path of Halkyards and Eldridges, connected to Eldridge-1488 (her death cert was transcribed so poorly, no wonder nobody else had the family connected to her!) = 8

do merges count?

Ok - 3 mergers completed!

Hi Frances :)

Once completed, a merge counts as a connection if you are merging an old unconnected profile into an already connected duplicate.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
