I am looking for the parents of William Burks (1750-1830). He married Elizabeth (Eliza) Cade in Virginia around 1767. They had eight children, including my ancestor Willis Burks (1784-1870).

The other childrens' names were Elizabeth Mary, Roland, George, Allen James, Levi, Nancy and Frances.

I am happy to provide clarification, answer questions or help with your genealogy if mine overlaps. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Roger:

I found this note online:

From Harrodsburg Historical Society:

Lincoln County KY Early KY Householders 1787-1811
Shows dates when counted:

•Burks, Allen:  09Aug93, 10Apr95, 01Jun96, 04Aug02, 06Jun03, 06Aug04, 23Aug06.

•Burks, George:  28Jun87, 18May89, 02Jun90, 23Jun91, 20Aug93, 20May94, 19Jul00, 04Aug02, 06Jun03., 07Aug04, 08Jul05, 23Aug06.

•Burks, Levi:  06Jun03, 26Aug04, 16Aug05, 23Aug06, 10Jul09, 1811.

•Burks, Mathew/Matthew:  22Jun09, 1811.

•Burks, Rollin/Rolling/Roland/Rolen;  18Jul98, 02Jul99, 31Jul00, 13Jul01, 26May02, 18Jul03, 04Aug04,16Aug05,28Jun06.

•Burks, William:  24Aug87, 19May89, 02Jun90, 21Jun91, 28Sep92, 10Aug93, 04Jul99, 09Jul01, 12Aug02, 1803, 07Jun03, 07Aug04, 16Aug05.

•Burks, WILLIS:  16Aug05, 04Aug06, 1811.

•Burk, William Jr:   09Jul01.

I gather some believe that William Burks was the son of Samuel Burks Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Albemarle County..but a possible additional child (William) was not mentioned in Samuel Jr's will. (Which doesn't completely rule him out as a son because some other provision may have been made for this child. I have seen this before in wills/deeds).

Albemarle Co., VA, WB 2:l0-11, written 5 Jan l743; proved 13 July 1753.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

Hi Ann, this is very helpful - thanks for taking the time to answer. This has been our branch of the family's "block" for a long time now, and this provides some context.

There's also a William Burks who married an Elizabeth Cade in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1818, but that's obviously not the same William or Elizabeth.

Thanks again, and I'll update as I find more information.

Hi Roger:

Here is the link to the information I shared - more there.

In case it matters, I am the person who created the page that Ann linked to in her previous comment.  I no longer stand by what I wrote.  As my genealogy skills improved, and I tried finding original records backing up secondary sources that I had seen, I couldn't find anything backing up the claims.

I have seen no evidence connecting this William to Samuel Burks Jr.  As noted above, William is not listed in his will.  I've searched court records and land records, and have seen no mention of William as a son of Samuel.
Thanks, Brad. Appreciate your note.

Hello Roger,  My name is Ginny Butcher Kish and William Burks (1750-1830) was my 5th GG.  Most of my info and family tree is on Wiki Tree. According to family records William married 'Eliza' in Virginia in 1766.  I show his parents as Samuel Burks (1725-1784) and Elizabeth Petit (1725-1780)

I've traced this line back to John Burks (1635-1735). Born in County Mayo, Ireland,he Immigrated to Virgina in1658.

Your Question has  already helped me by giving me 'Eliza's full name. Thank you.

I would be happy to share and compare infomation.

I have seen no primary source evidence that William was the son of Samuel Burks Jr.  As noted above, there is no mention of William in Samuel's will, and I haven't seen any other records mentioning William as a son of Samuel.

Hi Roger,

My cousin has done a lot of family tree research.  On his tree on Ancestory.com, he lists the father of William Burks as:

Samuel King Burks III (1753-1784)

And his parents as:

Samuel King Burks II & Elizabeth Leigh

One thing that doesn't correspond with some of the other answers is that his tree is showing the spouse of William being:

Nancy Webb (1788 - 1870)

Father on Nancy Webb being:

Jesse Webb (1760 - 1835) & Didamia Townshend (1765 - 1846)

Hope this information is useful.

Primary sources make it clear that this William Burks and Samuel King Burks III's son William were two different people, because they appear in different states and with different ages at the same time.

Amherst County VA probate records from 1788 for Samuel King Burks III mention that his son William was an orphan, which makes it clear that his William was not yet an adult at that time.

Tax lists for this William in Lincoln County KY appear from 1787 onward, and show that this William was over 21 years old in each tax list (because he was listed as a "tithable", which by definition was a male aged 21 or older)

William may very well be related to Samuel Burks III in some other way, but right now there is no evidence either way.

I have seen no evidence that this William Burks was married to Elizabeth Cade.  I believe that some researchers confused this William Burks with the one who married Elizabeth Cade in Georgia in 1818.  I have found no records in Kentucky that even mention the first name of his wife.
