She was married to Alexander C.A.A. Stein, a boot and shoemaker born in Merens Bavaria on May 17, 1838.  Elizabeth was his second wife.  He was first married to Margaret Roth, her sister.  I would like to know if they were Jewish.

Try Alexander C.A.A. Stein, Mernes, Main-Kinsig Kreis, Hessen, Germany.  There is at least one entry like that on ancestry.com.  I couldnt access it because I don't have a paid subscriiption but that is what is there for him.  There may an established tree for him.  This tree belongs to a "ccstein" who wasn't able to be reached for contact via the free membership but might be able to be contacted if you have a paid subscription.

Hope this helps.

If you can't get any records online, you may have to contact the church, since German records prior to the 1870's are generally church records only. The address for Mernes would be:

Katholische Pfarrgemeinde St. Peter Mernes
Pfarrbüro
Mühlbachweg 3
63628 Bad Soden-Salmünster Mernes

They have email: sankt-martin-oberndorf@bistum-fulda.de

Oberndorf is the parrish that also serves Mernes.

Helmut, is there a synagogue or temple in the area anonymous could contact if Stein is Jewish as is possibly suspected?

Many thanks,

Heidi

No synagogue in Merens. This website is pretty comprehensive:

http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/synagogen_hessen.htm#Main-Kinzig-Kreis (HU)

It does also give access to the surrounding counties and the adjacent counties in Bavaria.

What is the source for the towns? There is no Merens in Bavaria and only a Burgstein in Sachsen.

Addendum: Burgstein, Saxony, is right at the border to Bavaria.

Hi, in a search today, I came across your questions, and this terrific web page. The Ancestry entry is my tree, so here's a bit of information....

The Steins in my tree have so far been protestant, including Alexander Stein who was a practicing Lutheran. The town of Mernes is in Hesse, right on the border of Hesse/Bavaria which may be why the confusion in his obituary stating that Mernes is in Bavaria.

I have a bit of information about them both (Alexander and Elizabeth Roth) as they are my 3rd great grandparents, but have hit a bit of a barrier trying to find ealier information. If interested, let me know and I'll work to post or add information as I explore wikitree as I just joined today.

Best of luck in your research,

ccstein

I haven't been on here for awhile. My Great Grandfather Max Roth came over from Germany in 1880/81/82 each census has a different date..  His wife and he  Martha Shapiro were married here in US 1889.  According to 23&Me my mom is 45% Ashkanazi.  I don't know any of his siblings but do know his Mother was Fannie Marx and Father Jacob Roth.  Max was a furrier in Brookly NY.  I hope I helped.
